Footbag Banned at my school

Post by millenniumtree » 19 Oct 2004 17:34

It's official, yesterday, they banned footbag in or near the school.
They specifically banned any activity which involves kicking, hitting, or throwing an object. And more specifically, these activites cannot be performed _in_ or _near_ the school. What near means, I'm not sure. :P

I don't see why they had to email every single student because of one person's activity (me). And so far as I know, not a single person has been hurt by my actions or the actions of others (playing hacky sack while smoking).

I'm going to defy the ban as long as I can, but now that every instructor and every student got an email about the ban, I might not get very far.

The only reason I shred in the school is because it's so damn cold and rainy outside, and I'm basically stuck there for sometimes 10 hours a day.

By the way, my college is pretty darn small, and has no equipment or area for sporting activities. There are 2 living-room-sized break rooms, and that's about it.

They banned sports in general? How is it that you go to a school without a gym?

Wow, your school must be really small if they e-mailed everyone there. That's freakin crazy.

In the school I was at for year 11 and 12 (the last years before university) there were over 2000 people at the school (just in those two grades) and we regularly got sent emails to everybody in the school. Often it was students and they had their computer rights banned for abusing the system - but all the announcements and stuff were emailed. I dunno - maybe 2000 people isn't a lot at your schools - but in Australia I think that's about as big as schools get.

- If so - change school immediatly unless it's just the chemistry students! :P

Seriously I think you should write a letter of make an appointment with the person in charge and then explain and demonstrate what you're doing and try to make them understand that it's a non violent and peaceful pursuit. - Negotiation is the best course of action. If that doesn't work - start an underground guerrilla footbag club (like the Montreal club ;)) and launch footbag attacks on the general public by suddenly pulling out a footbag and shredding in public spots and then disappearing before you can be caught!

Che wrote and excellent book about this and you can read it online for free here

my high school "banned" footbag inside the halls too, so we moved to the gym, or outdoors, but if it was cold we'd go to the gym, no one in their right mind bans ahtletic activity from a room designed for athletic activitiy

Makes me wonder if anyone really reads my long posts...

"By the way, my college is pretty darn small, and has no equipment or area for sporting activities. There are 2 living-room-sized break rooms, and that's about it."

It's a small college, about 500 students, there is no gym. Think: Office building.

It's a tiny technology college. You can walk around the outside of the school in less than 5 minutes, 1 or 2 if you jog. :P

There are no on-campus areas for sporting activities, no gym, and everyone who goes to the college is either a programmer, networker, electronics, or a business degree. What little general education classes there are are limited to public speaking and math.

It's not like a high school where I could just go to the principal and show him my moves and have everything be peachy... It's a college, much more "professional", so I'd have to make a written statement in business language explaining why I NEED to shred on campus.

I like my underground parking better, and I'll be out of the damn school in a couple of months anyway. :P

But yes, not only do they encourage us to sit in front of a computer for 6+ hours at a time, they now are restricting our physical activity.

yep the answer is definitly my suggestion - become a Footbag Guerrilla and destroy the campus with your surprise attacks - then melt back into the crowd! You need a good name - the Footbag Armed Resistance of Madison? (FARM). I will send you weapons when I have some ;)

Stephen - I think the confusion was that people assumed you were in a High School because that sort of activity banning at a post-secondary school is just absurd. I've never heard of the like, whereas I've heard of lots of things banned at K-12 schools.

Either way, tough luck.

It's understandable if it's INSIDE the building. At my school (300 students...) you weren't allowed to sit in the halls...I just played outside in the winter (I don't know if you know what winter is like in WINTERpeg...) Plus I would go to the gym and play in the lounge (we had a lounge for every grade) until teachers were spotted. I got detention in grade 7 for playing that game where you huck the bag at people. We ran down a hall at 6 in the morning (I went to school early to hack with the janitor's son every morning...) and the guy threw the bag and it somehow flew through an open door and landed on a teachers desk who happened to be at school early to coach basketball or something....
Aside from that when I played outdoors teachers would join me. Plus they wrote this SUPER nice thing about me in my yearbook -- they actually somehow found out REAL details about me and discovered that it's called footbag!!!

Yeah, I've had students that I barely know come up to me and jokingly say "Watch out! You might hurt somebody!!". And a few times I've shouted. "GET BACK!! YOU'RE TOO CLOSE!! I MIGHT INJURE YOU!!"

It's pretty much a joke now.

Just the fact that the school president would email EVERYONE in the whole school to ban sporting activities on campus is absurd. He even spelled hacky sack wrong in the email. How unprofessional!

Just for fun, I'll post his email to the entire student body (and all the instructors too!)

Students:

Please refrain from playing any games that require hitting anything, kicking (hacky sac) or throwing anything (Frisbee) inside the building or near the building where another student or staff could be hit or injured.

Thanks

I remember when hacky sack was banned at my school. We started a group called 'Hack The Wind', as we were always forced to play outside with the howling winds of flatland Ontario blowing the bag in every direction. We slowly but surely inched our presence back inside the school, as most people understand that footbag is not a dangerous sport, but there are a few who can get a bit uppity. I wonder if they realize how little the damage potential is of a small, soft bag arcing through the air.

Fight back! Hack the Wind! Jeremy's got the right of it: Guerrilla Tactics, all the way!
