Why is Sex so Addictive?
Well, as my first topic back in the Discussion forum since the epic Battle of '06, I was wondering if anyone ever felt like they were completely addicted to sex, or anything to do with it, such as porn, self-gratification, etc.
If so, could you stop? Would you consider it any less of an addiction than say drug-addiction? Or is it a basic human need like food, water, etc.
IMO, it's an addiction far greater than most drugs. Try to abstain for as long as you can. I've quit drugs for years, but could never abstain from sexual activity for more than a couple weeks tops.
Also, is it a cultural thing? Do more affluent countries have more of an addiction? Absense of Religion? Is the media responsible for over-stimulating the populace through TV, Movies, Ads at Bus Stops, in Magazines?
I'll check back after Dan's had enough time to completely shred through this topic.

As I understand it sex addiction is essentially a drug addiction - when you orgasim your brain releases a number of very powerful chemicals into your system - a lot like opiates.
I also think it's an evolutionary thing - ie. people who have more sex are more likely to reproduce so their genes are more likely to continue on.

Basically. I think this might happen not only from orgasims, but I think chemicals are released when you just look at porn as well. Like drugs, you get used to it, and must move on to more or harder drugs (not speaking from experience). Same thing with porn. I guess you can say this about other non sexual things too.Jeremy wrote:As I understand it sex addiction is essentially a drug addiction - when you orgasim your brain releases a number of very powerful chemicals into your system - a lot like opiates.

You obviously have never done any very hard drugs. Not beating your dick is nil to trying to stop putting needles in your arm or blow up your nose.IMO, it's an addiction far greater than most drugs.
Dopamine's are released not only during orgasm, but at any sexual stimulus (Seeing a picture of a naked girl, seeing a hot girl walking down the street). People wonder why Christian's are against unneeded sexual relations, and it's because it's just something that keeps you from fully knowing God (Along with a bazillion other things I could think of), because it's just a mental addiction that you're brain gets russled in to.

I've only had sex with two women. The time between those two women is about 7 years.
I'm not shitting you. I'm telling you the truth.
Sex (to me) is more than just 'getting off'... it's almost spiritual, and the bond between myself and the girl is more than just a physical one.
I know most people will disagree, but that's how I feel.
Sex is not addictive. Sure, the endorphins released in the brain when you organism (or just ejaculate - for most guys) is worth revisiting, but there's more to it than that. I think for alot of younger guys (and immature men, too), it's all about the primal power play of it all. It feels good to 'spread your seed!'. That's what it's about.... how many trees you can piss on - like a dog.
Sex is not addictive because it's more than just getting your rocks off, it's about human contact. I honestly find foreplay more addictive than sex itself because it's more misterious... more physical, and way more spiritual.
But then, I think it depends on the individual. People have an 'addictive' personality, whereby they can become addicted to anything easily. That anything can be drugs, food, sport (running can be a great source for the release of endorphins), or sex. So it really depends on the individual.
Oh, and although I said I only had sex with two different women, I've not stated how often or how, so don't try to put that on me.

Cunt.Why is sex so addictive?
No seriously, I think it has to do with the desire to touch things and be touched. Think about when you see something new and awe inspiring. Often the first instinct is to touch it. If the effect is pleasing, then you are likely to want to feel the pleasure again.
Think about it, if you have great sex with someone then you want that sex again. If the sex is terrible, then you are not likely to return and if you do it is purely out of the erotic desire itself.

Can't forget about the bombardment of sexuality brought by the media.
In my first two years of college, I'd hook up with girls quite often until I realized how meaningless it was. now i've been waiting for someone to sweep me off my feet *as cheesy as that sounds*
