So bump because this thing gets switched on tomorrow.
I'm really excited about it now. Have been brushing up on my particle physics heaps to understand what's going on. Of course there aren't going to be any collisions until October 21 and there aren't going to be any collisions at the full power until March 2009 but it's still a pretty amazing moment in science. If they do find the Higgs Boson then this will probably be the most significant scientific discovery of the last 50 years (since Crick and Watson discovered DNA).
God the news stories are annoying me though. The only thing that the LHC is doing that hasn't happened before is having massive massive computers at the point where the protons will collide in order to be able to record 10 petabytes (approx 10,000 terabytes) of data every second. Protons travelling at the speeds involved in this experiment are emitted from many different sources, including our sun, and collide all the time without the world ending. It's just difficult to have a 7000 tonne computer at the exact point where the collision occurs.

Edit; My bad, ultra high energy cosmic rays probably don't come from our Sun. They do travel much faster than the particles in the LHC though. One was measured travelling at 0.999999999999999999999995 x the speed of light, compared with the particles in the LHC which will only be travelling at 0.999999991 x the speed of light. Such a particle would have a collision magnitudes larger than those going on in the LHC if it ran into a stationary particle, let alone one coming in the opposite direction.
Woo triple post.
I just wanted to say that I'm an idiot. Instead of mentioning that there won't be any full speed collisions until next year, I should just pretend like everybody else, that if the experiment is going to end the world, it will happen tomorrow, so that all the conspiracy theory morons can shut up after that. Thoughtless.

That is good news
I was just telling Lauri Airinen on MSN that it's a lot closer to him than me, so he needs to tell me when he starts feeling it pull him in so I can have sex with the nearest thing (preferably a girl, but I suppose it doesn't matter too much) before I die.
I hope he doesn't psych me on that one

Damn, 10 petabytes a second. That is flipping outrageous.

It's ok, I've found a website that lets me know. If only they had an RSS feed.
