breaking in bags before sale

Post by david » 17 Feb 2007 19:20

I've realized letting players break in their own bags could be viewed as wrong.

If I made the bag, you should assume I know the best way to break it in.

If I broke in the bags I sold would you pay more for the time it would take? Would you care if the bag was slightly dirty because of my hands?

When I was a newbie I wrecked way too many bags by breaking them in in wrong methods. Pilling mainly.

Do you think this idea is stupid?

No. I would pay alittle more for a pre-broken in bag. Mainly because I suck at breaking in bags =(

Personally, I like to break in my own bags.

I wouldn't pay more, because your bags play well as soon as you get them (at least mine did).

And I still wouldn't pay more if they were rocks when you bought them.

I like my money.

You might want to add a poll here, it would be helpful.

I like to break in my own bags. Yes I did wreck my first bag by breaking it in wrong. A couple people I've bought bags from have included a small slip of paper with break in and cleaning guidelines which I think is a good idea.

Abshire makes the "mushy" for $5 extra but IMO they aren't much less stiffer than his normal bags. They still require substantial break in. I think if you want to add it as an option with or without a surcharge that's up to you. I think it's better to just be sure to teach newbs how to properly break their bags in and care for them more than anything.

if you make bags that play well from the start, theres no need.

i roll my bags for like 10mins, just to get the gather even. i surely wouldnt pay anymore for somebody to roll a bag for me, but then again, i dont really purchase bags that often either.

i think its something you could do if someone was new to footbag, and ask them first. but if an expierenced footbagger cant even break in a bag on their own, they should stick to mr. sandbags.

From some time I'm breaking-in bags I stitch for selling. I'm doing that for free. People like it and I like it because I'm doing it well and people can fully enjoy their Dorshbags :).

I break in my own bags, it would be nice to buy a broken in bag though, when I sell bags I usually somewhat break them in by hand rolling for about an hour.

I like the long breaking in process. You get more attached when you have countless hours of hand massaging. After the breaking in part is done you get that feeling of satisfaction. Also all the bags you've sold to me are practically playable when i got them, sooooo thank you for being good at stiching :)

Also whats your method for creating the perfect non-pilled footbag?

i dont think id want a pre-broken in bag. i too like hand massaging my own. getting a pre-broken in bag would mean that itll have a shorter life while in your hands.

i guess new footbaggers would need some sort of instruction as to how to break in a bag without harming it... but the breakin process is part of the fun.

i believe the one who made the bag has the right to do with it, what he thinks is right before sending it to the person who wanted it, my opinion

Am I the only one who doesn't like spending time breaking bags in?

Just as you have people review your bags, I think it would be important for people to review your breaking in process. Make a batch of bags, all as similar as possible. Break in half of them; keep track of which ones you broke in. Keep track of how much time (b) it took you to break in each bag. Take them to a tournament/jam, and ask people (one at a time) to pick out the better bags(1). Ask them how much more they think the better ones are worth(a)(2).

c is the price of the unbroken-in bag
d is the time it took to stitch the bag

If a/b is comparable to c/d, then breaking in is worthwhile.

If you wanted to target only people who don't like breaking in their own bags, then after asking questions 1 and 2, ask them if they enjoy breaking in their own bags(3). If they say yes, remove their information from the collective survey.

I always found problems about selling bags pre-broken in, since I couldn't evaluate the value of breaking in bags before selling them openly. It's very troubling to me. I mean, if you're like Richard Abshire with the "mushy" option in mind, that's fine I guess. I sometimes feel that breaking in a bag would lessen its value. I recommend selling freshly stitched bags just because, well, they're fresh.

Whatever.

I enjoy and have no problem breaking in my own bags, or bags from other stitchers.

i think like Brinard, i hand massage my own bag to make the gather even and thats all. i dont want to give/sell/trade a bag that iv kicked (even once)

IMO, its just a visual part, i would be happy to receive a "squared" bag, i prefer them round, thats the only reason i hand massge it a lil bit (about 15 - 30 min)

I think it makes sense to sell something that works properly as soon as you receive it. I also think that there are quite a few people out there who aren't very good at breaking in bags or aren't patient enough to do so, which results in bags not reaching their potential.

I agree with the idea that players having to break in their own bags could be wrong. However, i don't think stitchers breaking in their bags is a very good idea, or at least not for me. Breaking in every footbag i make would drive me crazy. A single bag takes long enough to stitch already, and i don't think a buyer would be willing to pay what i would need to charge for it. I think that it's also nice to receive a bag that is brand new and untouched.

The best idea is, like Brinard said, to make a bag that plays perfectly from day 1. After about a year of trying and experimenting with heaps of weird designs, i think i have done this.

I'm thinking about something... and there is a very high chance it has something to do with footbag.

Don't get me wrong, I like rubbing my bag as much as the next guy, but I've been bothered by the absence of true ready to play 32s for quite some time. The problem I see is that no stitcher would be able to spend X time kneading each bag in his hands and keep that pace up indefinitely while trying to sell for profit.

I'll bet a paint shaker could break in a bag in no time. Or destroy it. Either way is interesting.

If you break in the bags how cod does, then it only take an extra 15 minutes. I've never had any problems with pilling, and its still practically fresh. The people at the school prefer it when I break in the bags before I sell them.
