nah man I haven't hit them yet. I PLAN to hit them this month. But I'll take those props and put them in a decorative box to keep for when I DO hit them. Looking back at my list, I'd like to rearrange some stuff. I don't think whirr will be THAT hard. I mean I've tried it once or twice before and I think I know how I need to think about it. The first dex always clears but more often than not I don't swing my leg fully around wide enough and I clip the bag with my calf on the way back down. 'Nuther one of them crazy "slow down" deals.

I like how I haven't played since before I (the 6th I think) wrote that last post about my goals. . . until today. So I'm calling shenanigans on my list and it'll be the list for December.
The Good News:
I footed janiwalker . .
The Bad News:
Q01's give me shin splints.
Man breaks aren't nice to me. Last night I committed to starting back up again since I found out I'm not getting the Q03's till mid December so I put in new insoles and dicked around for a few minutes. It took me about five tries to hit toe whirl. . .
and even more to hit flip ducking clipper. My flip clipper felt like lead.
Lots of people take breaks from footbag. They focus on school work, work, and other things. I got sick and sat on couch and unloaded my wallet on video games and discovered all sorts of delicious and expensive beers. So from going footbagfootbag to vegging out on the couch back to footbag. It's going to take some work.
But it felt real good to have the bag back on my feet so it'll be my pleasure to get back into baggin' shape.

- janiwalker *
- pdx whirl x6 first try. And again right after. Didn't care enough after a while to hit 10 (which was the initial plan)
- footed whirr - - blah.
- inspinning stuff: wanted to see if I could still do it
clipper
mirage
. . . bs
- skooled barrages some more. Toe barrages are so hard. I'm going to start doing them. . I mean I'm going to start trying to hit it.
- couple close attempts at flurry and high plains drifter. If I ever hit HPD I'm going to do it in front of one of my friends. His favorite western is High Plains Drifter. He hates footbag. There's a chance I won't see him before I go to LA and an even greater chance I won't hit it before I leave.
* k now the story about the janiwalker. I'm not sure if it was clean. It felt cleaner than anything I've done before so that's why I'm saying I hit it. It's one of those deals where I do barraging sets as legit and deep as I can so that
I rarely ever clear them and
if I do clear them I'm 95% sure I did it right. Kind of a strange way to go about doing something but it's not like I'm doing it on purpose.
This being written, I'm going to see if I can do it again tomorrow or the next day and then get it on video when I have the energy. I had a shitty session overall today so I'm not feeling good about standing in front of my webcam. But check back on a new post here in a few days and you might just see me hit something ADVANCED

It'll be up tonight. Late. Check it out between then and tomorrow. Sorry again.
it's been a pretty wild couple weeks and I may be slightly depressed. Although it could just be this lovely Syracuse weather. It's more likely the case of anxiety with the departure date getting closer.
the three weeks or so without footbag was hell. But now it seems whenever I play footbag I feel terrible after I'm done. So now it just seems to fill some void where I don't want to sit in my basement doing nothing any more. Drinking is becoming less and less fun (like it ever played that big of a role anyway. . . ) - the conclusion? I REALLY REALLY NEED TO PLAY WITH SOMEONE. Or at least go and hang out at a session. I'm so embarrassed and uncomfortable with my game right now that I don't even think I'd play all that much if and when I go to Rochester and hack with Doug and Ian.

Um. I'm just going to preface this with a kind of warning. If you were to read through half of my blog (please don't) you'd understand there's a reason why I call it my struggle. I complain - a lot. Maybe it's why I don't have a lot of friends on modified. I don't know. It's one of the biggest regrets I have on this forum - that I couldn't just be a smiling poster and writing up meaningful things in other people's blogs and on their videos. More often than not I'm just writing in my own blog restating things I've been saying since page 3. K I'll wrap up this warning.
this is going to be my last post. It's going to have a lot of things in it that I've wanted to keep to myself. For whatever reason I want to write it down here. My biggest hope is that this can slide passed the 6th page of blogs in no time. We'll see. Please read only if you're a friend of mine or if you honestly care why I'm no longer going to play this game. Thanks.
- - I started shredding seriously in the summer of '04 after I graduated from high school. By then I had already been hacking for a couple years. I knew about footbag. I spent hours and hours each week surfing flipsider and hackrifice. Peter Irish was God. Erik Chan and his crew were his badass minions of freestyle justice. And I had Matt Cross on my buddylist on AIM. My journey really began.
- - I went to Nazareth, which is about 10 minutes to RIT, and got to play with the RFA. I can still remember when Matt came to Nazareth and we had a little session in the gym. It was the first time I had ever seen a freestyler in real life. There was something about Matt that I knew I admired but it was the same sort of thing that kept us apart, even to this day. For one reason or another I've always had the impression that he thought I was some awkward untouchable. Yet when I see who he keeps as close friends I wonder what I'm missing. Maybe I'm just overreacting and THAT's why Matt's never really opened up to me. Not sure. But Matt if you're reading this please don't take this as me accusing you of being a bad person. You're the man and I'm sorry I wasn't able to have the confidence to speak with you more "real".
- - My time with the RFA was amazing and a complete waste. It got me to train and jump started my time with freestyle. But I never learned anything. When I think of playing with people who are better than you, I always imagined people giving tips and help them out with their game. I can count the number of times I got help on my game on one hand. And before I knew it I was off to another school across the state.
- - Siena College is something I'd better not get into. I lost a lot of weight, played too much footbag poorly, and developed awful habits. Things like osis > infinity got too comfortable and I didn't know what to skool when and to what degree. I was just floundering with learning my flip pixie set (which is still laughable) and BOPing.
The rest of my history up till now is just a bunch of the same. Slow progression and little to no recognition by the community. How little I was recieved is mostly my own fault, I know. But still. I warned you this was going to be full of empty bitching.
The reason this entry is not accompanied by a video, like I promised (oh the promises), is because I looked back on what I thought was a janiwalker on my video playback and almost fell out of my chair. I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry. It's a hesitating stepping set. A bad one, at that. It is, I believe, the epitome of why I can't play this game anymore:
When I play I have the perception I'm going speed/accuracy "x", but when I watch myself play that X looks more like an M - I'm very slow and actually not very precise at all with my movements. Now this is fine, it's natural and can be compensated for. But the thing is that that x is honestly as fast as I can go. When I try janiwalker or barrage I'm moving my legs as fast as they can go. literally. Like, I can even feel my knees twisting and straining to move at that speed. In reality I've seen people do pdx mirages with more speed and purposeful movement.
Holy shit. I'm sick of writing this. And I'm scared to post it. So I'm just to wrap this up.
I'm done with footbag. It's taken too much away from me. It was fun, don't get me wrong. It was an amazing experience. But I feel that others (EVERYONE ELSE, in fact) is having a much more fulfilling time with it. I'm not an athlete. I'm not coordinated at all. Footbag has been a huge gap between my parents and myself for 4 and a half years. They hate it. None of my friends play it. I think what it boils down to is that I'm just so tired of being alone in this game. The friends I've made are either young enough to make things awkward or too far away.
My tag is Darkshredder because I wanted to come onto the scene as some unknown kid from Syracuse who played with the RFA once, post a few things on modified, and blow up onto the scene with an amazing style and game that people would admire and I would have a place in the community. I would come back to the forums with a new tag, Opaqueshredder. It was a dumb joke I thought was pretty clever four years ago. But it just goes to show you I had high hopes for myself and nothing has come of it.
Well I just stared at the screen for about 3 minutes without writing anything so I guess it's time to stop writing.
I have too many regrets in this game. There aren't too many regrets I have outside of it, though. I have found a lot of joy through it but entirely way too much pain, both physically and mentally. Is it possible that I'll start playing again? I guess. But somehow I doubt it. I think I've come to a breaking point with footbag and it's one hell of a thing to break. It'd take quite a bit of super glue to put it back together.
edit:
. . I'm gonna miss this smiley. And this one

Well I know I'm one of the kids that's young enough to make things awkward, and this will be the last I post in your blog in order to bury it and all, but uh, Pat you're a great guy. I always loved your style, I always had a great time going to syracuse to play with you. I know what you mean about being the guy who doesn't progress and has no real modifriends. Look at Doug and look at me. I've been trying to catch up to him since day 1 and he just keeps jumping farther and farther past me. Either way, man. If you want to come chill without footbag involved before you leave, I have the house to myself for a while this break. Gimme a ring. we'll just chill

ha I found this website that allows you to embed Xbox 360 style achievements into forums and myspace and all that jazz. Customizable so you can have something like
50g Unlocked Shooting Set!
really funny so I thought I'd try it out on the only forum I go to. . . It didn't work unfortunately so I had to bail and just put the rolly eyes.
and um. Yes. I'm back in it - but this time on the West Coast side of things. Ya'll know this game is too much of a frenzy of gnarly awesome radness to just up and out. I made a promise that I would at least kick a footbag until the day my body craps out on me. For better or worse I intend to keep that promise. But unfortunately I'd rather kind of keep it on the solo level. I think what made me so discouraged before was the sense of defeat because I was basing myself on a lot of the amazing talent we have in this community. So I've grown from that. Had a nice month or two off (which was so incredibly painful) and now I'm back at it more or less stronger than ever.
I'm planning on making it to the US Open and the Green Cup. One or the other or both if I can afford it. So I'm "training" for those. I have a bag I made which is working pretty well. I use Q3's. I like them.

Hey Asmus thanks man. I was never really gone. Just off the radar a bit.
So I just got back from Santa Monica where I shred with some crazy people. I don't mean to be an ass so I won't call them kickboxers. I know that's not it. But you know the people who do the martial arts breakdancing thing? I think it's Brazilian. Anyway there's always a crowd of people doing that there on the weekends and I try to make it out every time so that I can give people something else to look at.
G4 was having a Ninja Warrior festival at SM as well. Got to see Olivia Munn. Got some free Venom energy drink (which I promptly took a sip of, threw out, and filled with water
) That was fun. I snuck by some security and found a nice place to play to some Sick Awesome Punk Rock they were playing for the show. The security saw me drop trow and start hacking and were very clearly like, "Hey wait - but-t-uh. . oh fuck it. Go on wit yo crazy hippy self. . ."
To give you guys an idea of how I shred now, I'm trying to actually take my sessions more seriously. Before I just played to play. Now I play because I honestly want to get better. So although I still suck at this game and probably won't make any visible improvements in a session (like a new trick, new concept, etc) I still try drilling new links and harder combos. The idea is to get me away from so many bad habits like osis > infinity , pdx illusion > pixie ss clip , and I'm doing my best to phase out pdx mirage at least - little blur goes a long way sometimes and it's really not that hard. I actually tend to gather more momentum and confidence from blur than just a pdx mirage. Just a little sumthin sumthin I cooked up.
I've been really trying to work symposium with atomic shuffle a lot lately since I think it creates a very unique jerky style. So some things I tried a lot today was:
backside smear > tap > pixie ss mirage > symp mirage > legbeater
symp mirage > atom > rpt
pogo mirage > legbeater bs
and I'm also trying to get some flip stuff down like vertigo and void (my drifters have come a long way since last summer)
I think the biggest commitment I've seen pop up since my return has been the fact I do 30 datw inout outin both feet before I even start to shred hard. Now if that's not training I don't know what is. Something big is going to happen when I start dishing out paradons and barflies bsos. And I'm serious.
some new tricks you guys may find new for me:
enterrage
whirr
finally found out how to do twirls (bs)
mobius bsos
ocean bs
blender bsos
symple double pickup (from clipper) - got this the other day. Doubt it was clean. But it felt sweet.
all sorts of combinations with atomic. I'm pleased with atomic progress. I can do torques and drifters now out of it ss and op.
I've been thinking a lot about the science of shred, and I'd like to share them, but honestly I can't put them into words right now. I'm so hungry. So I'm going to go eat something and play Gears 2 and I'll be back probably in a few weeks to write more in this blog. Maybe I'll post after Green Cup.

hey so this is me being a nub: I had my first real string with pixie AND FAIRY both feet. Man oh man. I think my leg is finally figuring out flip fairy! Thanks go out to Jorden M for giving fairy advice to someone at some jam I went to (the latest one. . . I think it was NYFA) and saying it loud enough for me to hear it
. He mentioned that he points his toes outward just after stalling and before setting the bag for a fairy set. So the foot and the knee both have to twist for a nice sweeping fairy set.
blender is a funny trick. I really hope I'm doing flip right. Sometimes I think I whip the leg up and down and not actually dexing in a circular motion.
my bag has a few holes in it. I never would've imagined a bag I make ever lasting long enough to have holes in it.
pixie gyro mirage (finally!) and pickup and a really slopped up far osis
another relatively clean whirr. I think.
Grindhouse is a great movie to watch with anyone over the age of 65. They're more confused than grossed out.

Overall meh session. But
little bit of legeater (and I tried legeater > legbeater because that's what you do when you recently hit legeater and still think its the bee's knees)
little bits and pieces of barrages bsos. Still awkward and slightly painful.
little bit o' legbreaker (almost sos'd)
it was an RFA style shred for me since, as you all should be aware, it's the weekend of GRASS '09. My first comp and my favorite by far. Since it's easy to get to. . . But anyway, if you're new to the way I shred I like to mimic other people and their links a lot and when I try to do an RFA themed session I try to do tricks that appear in the shred of some people who introduced me to this game and kept the fire going during the dark and scary tiltless times: So here's what I got. . .
Matt Cross - ducking butt stall. Second try. Yay.
worked on swirling set. Thought I'd give it a go. Oh well.
gyro illusion bsos (Matt probably doesn't actually think this is a big part of his game . . and it's not. . but every time I shred with him and he hits it it looks so stylie and sick)
pixie knee bump > gyro knee bump > driter. Shrug
Mike Anello - eggbeater > legbeater bs
footed diving eggbeater about a million and a half times
smear > terrage > smudge > terrage > dimwalk > bubba beater
Paul Agostinelli - tried to hit toe torque and toe ss torque as much as possible in midstring. It's just hard for me to think of it. I'm still way too much of a clipper player.
neo muted clipper > stepping reverse guay > ducking inside stall > neo hand catch > laugh.
Warmed up with a whole load of rakes and rakish tricks
Chris Dean - even though I've never hit it, never tried it, I wanted to try spinning flapper stall. So I tried a few times for fun and almost got it on the second of four tries. But It's far too silly for me. Props Chris.
My annual attempt at pdx drifter > pdx whirl rpt (got a couple times)
Gyro xbd toe > ripwalk
Steve Gale - Dirty Ho (pixie knee bumping rake). Classic.
Aric McIntosh - Probably one of the longest toe shuffling / ducking strings I've ever had. And the funny thing was that I said "This is for Aric" just before and about 25 contacts in I caught it took a five minute break to celebrate.
Doug and Ian? Uh. Well we're pretty much equals us three so me just shredding was like an homage to your games. Doug, I got spinning ducking butter bsos for the first time first try today and devoted all my knee tendons to trying to sos barrage and double pickup all in one string. Oh and I got smoke bsos too. Ian, I wish I could hit fairy tricks like you. So I skooled them. I hit fairy whirl on my good leg and pixie whirl on my other leg (my flip pixie whirl, actually). It was pretty cool.
* * I need to stitch another bag. So sick of cutting panels. I need to find out a better way to cut them out. I read somewhere Mosher knows a way. Matt's technique is insanely economical. Too bad I was driving the last time he gave a stitching tutorial

Nice honorary session Pat, BUT if you really wanted to do a string like me you wouldve gotten super close to bsosing those tricks first try and then spending 2 worthless hours trying to recreate the magic in which you finally fluke it but still aren't satisfied.... So, with that said, I demand you go back and do it again in this format.

So wanna know what's cool?
Boba drinks. I was playing in the star plated centRE of Hollywood yesterday, halfway expecting to get some dollar bills or whatnot. Got nothing, but convinced two guys to check out some YouTube footbag videos. They're also immediately fans of Dave because:
- I told them he's about 45 million times better than I am. Obviously they didn't believe me.
- He's from Pennsylvania. Not sure why they thought that was funny but apparently he's "the shit" for coming from PA. They were bizarre people.
but yeah. Boba. I had a green tea Boba drink at this crazy hipster place right outside of where Spongebob, Captain Jack Sparrow, Chucky, Homer Simpson, and some demon thing (I have no idea what movie this guy was from. . . but good lord.) were walking up and down the blvd scaring and/or high fiving kids.
good stuff. Finally I get a taste of the bobally. Too bad it was after a 2.5 hour pretty intense session. The beads kind of upset my stomach. Or it was the Quiznos sub I ate in 10 seconds flat. Either way, both were very welcome and tasted like shavings of awesome.
So it wasn't a very productive session since I was more or less "Shredding". It made me think, though. I wonder if my aversion to playing in basements or driveways or garages has in some way shaped my game. 95% of my entire career has been spent shredding in public places. Doesn't really leave room for hardcore skooling, I'd say. I mean it's not fun to have people walk by and me dropping on the same mundane drill over and over and over. I've decided I need my own place with a nice private driveway or at least some sort of personal shred space. Think it'll help. If anyone has any thoughts on this please chime in. I thought it was pretty interesting as I walked 6 miles back to my brother's house. Painful walk. Ugh. I almost threw up at outside of an Auto Zone.
Another thing I tried out during the session was something I've noticed a lot of the top players as well as many players I look up to. They "bail" to ss butterfly > stepping trick. It's actually incrediby useful and pretty stylie if you can manage to make a ss butter look. . good. . Which people do. So I gave it a try and I must say, it increased those string lengths noticeably. The way my mind works while I string combos is that it either has to be a tripless string or a BOP. . . or a ss pickup (Shh. I'm getting over it) But ss butter > stepping is allowing me to position the bag a lot better as well as eliminating the possibility of me breaking away into a long bail of comfort-zone tricks that just get me stuck in a rut. When I get in a rut during a run I usually have to break out of it with a bigger trick to gather momentum again, and those usually end in the bag eating pavement.
So thank you ss butterfly > ripwalk and blur.
* oh and I'm a game tester again. Got a job at 2K Games. The good news? Yay gaming career. Bad News? Footbag may suffer again, and pay is that of a 17 year old's summer job. Ouch. My ego.
I'm going to hop on the longboard and cruise over to the blvd again. Need patch up my bag and then I'm off. Later.

Just closed up an emergency bag. Probably my worst stitching ever. Just awful. But the closing was probably the best ever. So that was weird. I shrug.
Not going to play today for whatever reason. I stitched the bag about a half an hour ago and then X-Men Last Stand came on so I decided to watch that and I've been toying with the idea of doing some level editing on UE3. I'm making a level that's kind of like an Unreal version of Echo Base from Star Wars. Not sure if I'll make it a capture the flag or team deathmatch level. Maybe both, if I can settle on a set design instead of just stringing random bunkers and hallways together. It's more of an experiement in terrain textures than anything as well as the fact that I found a ton of static mesh items that look almost exactly like they belong on Hoth.
I hacked for a bit yesterday. Short session because I wasn't feeling very well and my energy was really low. But it was pretty fun because I found an amazing spot in Little Tokyo. Like. . An event could be held in this plaza it's so massive and flat and made for footbag.
Nothing cool got hit except midstring porque, which is still a rare move for me, pdx mirage > ocean > pdx whirl > ripwalk > hand catch (won't even call it midstring) and a nice long relaxed combination of footbag tricks that highlighted diving frigid osis and osis > inspinning clipper and butterfly, which was literally a first for me. It seems like something I would've had dialed and gone through phases of obsession with, but for some reason I'd never attempted it till yesterday.

I honestly might get back into radiohead simply for the amnesiac album. It's been about 3 years since I've listened to Radiohead as a fan and not as someone hearing Creep and Karma Police on the radio over and over and over.
- - oh and I'm going to play freestyle footbag today as soon as I hit the lunch scene.

this isn't the echo base. That'll show up at some point, trust me. This is just something I've been working on ever since I learned out to add waterfalls and do crazy things to the terrain. This is editing mode so the quality isn't the best, for the sake of the process. But rest assured if anyone were to walk around in this environment it would be quite pleasant and . . . dusk-ish.
