Dr. Bear, The US champion!

Post by brianbear » 04 Oct 2008 21:32

2014: This is a funny first post that I leave for nostalgia! Right now, I am living in Mountain View contemplating my next step of a traveling life.
currently: 27 years old. Pro Footbag Stitcher. US Champ. Stanford Club.

This is my new footblog. I guess I'll start off with some general information about myself. My name is Brian and my dj/producer name is dj mr bear, hence BrianBear. I make beats and am getting an AA in Music Technology right now. I attended UCSC for my general education, but realized they had no major in my interest. I am 21 at the moment, but my birthday is coming up very soon!!! woot. 22 is gonna be a good year for footbag. It also marks the third year of my footbag career. I pretty much got my first lavers for my 18th birthday. The first tricks i learned were mirage, around the world, pendulum (of course), and sole stalls. Then, about 6 months after the first lavers, I went to a shred in Santa Cruz where I met a bunch of cool people: Steve G, Emily, and a bunch of the Stanford footbag club, along with a couple of net players form the cruz. They were trying to teach me clipper stalls, and I had minor success. Shortly after, I began seshing with Emily and Dustin on occasion, and then on a regular basis with Dustin between classes on UCSC campus (awesome place to shred). I got a lot better with clippers and my toe stuff was getting pretty solid. It was awesome to play with him because looking back, he was improving a lot, hitting new stuff all the time. I think i also learned butterfly on my strong side then. The next step in my footbag progress was thanks to emily. We started playing on a regular basis a couple of times a week and she had the best drills for me. I can't quite remember all the stuff I learned during this time, but it was a lot!!! Sadly, I was still a very one-sided player. The next phase of shreds were up on UCSC campus at college 8 and these were great too. I really started getting my pendulous set from strong side down, and I could bust some tiltless for a while. I was also getting really good at sole stalls during this time. One epic highlight shred, was when I was working so hard to learn stepping and pixie... i asked emily and dustin what this was called, and i busted fairy no problem. They were pretty impressed and i hit fear that same sesh, along with fairy diving clipper soon after. Sometime around spring break Emily gave me call and said some footbaggers from Eugene were stopping through and wanted to play. Emily had a hurt back, and Dustin was out of town, and the net players are net players. So I got to rep the Santa Cruz footbag scene for Aaron Orton, Shawnell, and doh, i forget his name. Anyways, it was awesome seeing Orton bust some big tricks, and we had a fun shred on a tennis court. The time frame for this is kind've fuzzy but, I stopped shredding on a regular basis with them after second quarter junior year. Emily gave me my first 32 panel :) but it only lasted a month :( i was learning rakes during this time, and popped a couple panels scraping eek. I had bop, ducking and sometimes diving, fairy strong side, pendulous and pendulum strong side, spins, and probably a couple things i'm forgetting. no whirls or swirls or stepping or pixies or illusions though. I attended the Green Cup and got to have a one on one session with Lon Smith! This is before I had seen any videos of anyone at the top levels of the sport. It was amazing. I also got to shred with Nick Landes a little bit which was fun and watched Dave Clavens do some crazy stuff. I then started playing with the Stanford footbag club on an irregular basis. I was not shredding too much, just making beats for a while. Then, about 5 months ago, I started playing all the time!!! I was taking all online classes over summer and had loads of extra time, so I played footbag. I attened sessions at stanford every tuesday, and seeing so many styles has helped me a lot. Last July, I bought my first 32 panel, an abshire :) It's pretty awesome. I started attending saturday sessions at steve's and got infinitely better. I just had an awesome shred today where I hit my first double spinning trick--> inside stall pendulum-->frigid to double spin toe. pretty silly. I just got to play with Ryan Mulrouney and was very impressed!!! CRAZY even though he doesnt play on regular basis much!!! I also got to see Cale play for the first time and purchased a bag from him. my baby right now, i just let out a little filler cause i like em floppy, and its yellow and red atomics. That's where I am at now.

:D That first post was a really fun read, you have a good memory. That's right, you totally rep'ed Santa Cruz when the Eugene crew was in town.

We should all do something this week if you're in town... something fun... something we all like.

Bowling, maybe? Call or text. :-) And I'm down for a session too.

Just got back from shred with stanford crew.
Highlights:
two pendulous torques same run.
pendulous motion for only my second time.
double pickup ss. (i've hit fairy muted pickup a bunch).
gyro diving osis (NEW FIVER)
pendulous diving osis from weak side :)
pixie butterfly strong side(first time, my pixies need work)

CLOSE NEW TRICKS:

full pendulous to dyno dex sole stall.
pendulous symposium torque.
double spinning clipper.
pendulous ducking dyno. (my ducking dynos are super close)

CLOSE NEW COMBO:
symple dyno --> zooming symple swirl
it's gonna be off the hook.

it was overall a pretty good shred. I had some decent runs with ripwalk and my flip fairy is getting prettier. no surfing dyno... but surfing osis is getting pretty solid, definately usable for a sick link.

I have this crazy idea for once my swirls get better to hit symposium swirling reverse whirling swirl. I think it would look a lot like symposium whirling ripstein.

thats all.

I have gone stitching crazy. I've made 6 bags in the past 3 days :O
hopefullly two more today... I am trying to figure out the perfect template and how gather to use, so i'm testing some stuff out!

Tuesday at Stanford I hit some silly stuff...
rooted fairy rooted pickup, as i landed the bag magically plopped on my foot while it hit the ground. lol. pete said he would give it 5 adds, two dexes two symposiums, stall.

we were messing around doing some vans shred and i hit swirling symple dyno, woot to fearless.

fearless arsenal:

fairy diving osis, gyro diving osis, pixie ducking butterfly, stepping dyno, gyro dyno, fairy muted dyno, motion, phasing osis, surfing toe (i only hit this to go into a pendulous), pixie ducking osis, paradox torque.

For whatever reason, pendulum is my favorite trick so you are definitely my footbag hero. Just felt the need to tell you that :)

gotta say I really enjoy your style, man. The first time I saw a mid string sole stall in there I had to double take. I like the trick selection a bunch. Can't wait til the frame rate and resolution picks up and the sun content goes down on those shots. I'm ready for some high-quality footage haha.

i'll hit it again

ideas.
stepulous rev whirl?

i reallly want to duck stepulous into a butterfly
so i can be a mega-ripped-warrior.
hehe. my sewing goal is a bag every two days. i spend a lot of time on buses and trains since i don't have a car, so it's easy!!! and while i wait for the transportation i just shred :)

i cant believe it's been soo long...

footbag is the shit

i hit pendulous barfly rake.
nuclear sole.
fairy sole>symple swirl
flapper AND sole bsos
and pendulums of course bsos
and rev whirl bsos
and surfing pickup
and surfing sole
AND surfing sole>ss symple swirl.
and ripulous (pendulous ripstien)

TODAY!

my spins and ducks and dives are getting off the hook too
FIRST ducking osis>zooming ducking osis B2B today also.
I have been training in running shoes cause lavers hurt my back (i have some pretty sever sculiosis or however you spell it and lavers just aren't doing it for me... but if i train in running shoes (SUPER small toe box and indented insides (the arches have that spot you should fill in with shoe goo like that cc's) i feel great!!!
Thinking about modding some gunits and trading some footbags to freedomfootbags instead of a paycheck for some quantums.
BTW im stitiching for freedom and met abshire today :)
awesome stuff, he gave some good tips on inspecting fabric and hopefully i can learn more over this week while im in san diego!!!!!!

I have soo much fun or this sport i got a round of applause today for hitting nuclear sole from a random guy :)i can hit more than 50 % of the time now, yay!
My double dyno pendulous set is riddick... i have SOOO much time for the last THIRD dex that alex told me to set it lower so my dex isn't so delayed...
ITS A CRAZY TRICK!!!
i can almost hit from clipper: left clipp, double dyno to zooming is pretty darn easy for me!

i finished a bag in an ONE AND A HALF hours about a week ago.
Just trying to shave down time off of my usual 2 hours by:
sewing with no one around to bother me
listening to "a state of trance" podcast
just concentrating on speed

it turned out just as nice as my other bags, soo I hope I can keep up the pace.

shred highlights from today:
dyno bsos finally.
rev. whirl and whirl bsos.
swirling flapper.

what are your favorite time-reducing stitching techniques?

nice new moves. I hope you'll keep up on the string lengthening as well as the weird stuff!
