Rolled ankles

Post by Guest_2 » 23 Apr 2006 15:48

I rolled my ankle landing on an uneven surface while busking yesterday after the demo

I made no $ but
Kept playing despite the pain because I convinced two guys to continue jamming so I could shred w/their music
Tightened the laces and relaced it to provide better ankle support

However, a friend iced my ankle later that day and she already lectured me on my stupidity over continuing to play

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now what do I do?
It fucking hurts and it's screwing up my plans for shred :-(
It's a bit swollen and flexibility is compromised
I would most definately recommend you NOT play on it for at least a week, and likely more if it actually swelled. Before I sprained my ankle, I rolled it a couple times. I am positive that it compromised my ligaments' strength, and directly led to a sprain. If you don't take some time off to give your ligaments a chance to recover, you're putting yourself at risk for more serious injuries. It's that whole "ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" thing.
Point and game. That same type of thing happened at Daryl Genz house when I stayed there, we were all shreding then Jim had to do a Barfly or something then land on ankle..... He couldnt shred the rest of the time I was there and only a little at CSS besides sunday.
this may be obvious, but i believe the best way to avoid serious effects from ankle rollings is to, as soon as the roll begins, to collapse to the ground in the direction of the roll, to avoid putting any weight on the part of the foot that would normally be damaged. or something like that. i pretty much trained myself to do it, since i seem to land in that position fairly often, and the results have been fairly consistant. in a recent example, i landed on the front left toe of my left shoe, and rolled over horribly in that direction, to the right, but i just went limp and collapsed perfectly, and was playing footbag 5 minutes later.
I agree! I actually did this, but I don't think I had a choice. It didn't look like anything was all that bad, and the guys I was busking with thought I was ok because it was all so smooth [me falling on my ass ;-)]
I just went with it and know it could've been a whole lot worse. I'm going to try a little light freestyle today to see how things go
Rolled my ankle today. It's happened once before, it was worse the first time so I'm not too bummed out... I probably shouldn't have kept playing, but it only hurt when i cranked it for clipper/osis. So.. i only 25-30 more of those. (yeah, stupid i know.) I'm icing it nonstop and hopefully I'll be able to play wednesday... probably lose flexibility for a while though, and have to retrain my flip clipper again. :(
I think the only thing to do is ice and avoid stretching/cranking until it doesn't hurt at ALL anymore.
[quote="FunkLovesFootbag"] I'm icing it nonstop.../quote]
I don't know if you meant this in the literal sense, but just in case...
You probably don't want to keep the ice on your ankle for more than 10 minutes at a time, because after the first 10 minutes the effect of icing kind of reverses. Your body will start to send extra blood to your ankle trying to heat it up, which can cause extra swelling. I suggest icing for 10-12, and then taking an equally long break in between icings.
Good luck with the healing process.
Sprains can heal in a few days if you keep off them and/or get an ankle support. You'll be playing in no time.
You probably know htis.. but don't go to sleep with your ankle wrapped you could wake up to a really sore leg
NOT REALLY. While they may stop hurting and swelling will go down within a few days, they are still seriously weakened. In fact, it takes far longer (>3 months) for the collagen in your ankle to repair itself to near pre-injury strength. While weaker collagen 1 forms at the tearing location, it takes a a lot of time to form into collagen 3, which is the stabilized form. Playing within a "few days" is a horrible idea.
Your health is more important than anything.
i agree. and of course there are various degrees of sprains. but as zach said, while it may not hurt and may flex without discomfort, that doesnt mean its completely restored to the previous
i have started playing very lightly again. i cant physically crank it to where it should be for consistant stalling, but close enough. and its still in a good amount of discomfort. but i think its good to start stretching it at some point so it doesnt stiffen up anymore.
Always be doing some light streching, when I rolled my ankle about a month ago I was streching it whenever I was standing up. Whether at work, or in klass, I was streching. And with doing that I was able to get back to kicking in less time than if your let it heal on it's own.
Okay, my ankle is kind of messed up right now. I don't know if I would classify it as a "rolled ankle", but it just kind of hurts whenever I put it in a clipper position, then feels pretty good the next day until I shred for 20 minutes then it gets bad again. I think it has something to do with how I practice my flip clips, I don't think I land correctly with the left foot, and I somehow kind of twist the ankle weirdly. But thats just improper form that I can work on later. What I need now is just stretches that would help strengthen my ankles. Can anyone describe or put pictures of good stretches? (posting pics would be better, but describing is fine too :) )
Thanks
I've rolled my ankle at least 10 times in the last 6 months. I can barely bend it into clipper position anymore. Icing and not playing are no longer effective (I took a three week break icing 3 times a day with no results).
The pain is definately on the outside of the foot just beside the ankle. Part of the problem is that some of the bones in my foot have shifted out of alignment such that the aggravated tendon is not in a position to heal... or so the physiotherapist tells me. He's been trying to yank it back into the proper position. At $40 an appointment, I hope it works.
