Sharp Knee Pain

Post by Add Block » 19 Jan 2015 12:55

I've looked all over this forum but couldn't find anything with my specific kind of pain. I have little hope that it won't simply be 'rest for a couple of months' kind of stuff, but I'll try it anyway.

I have a very sharp, sudden and short pain through my right knee every time I either put a lot of force on it (land after a high jump) or if I bend it with enough weight on it.

It triggers at an exact point of bending my leg and it has to bear the whole weight of my body, I can safely do a squat, but not a pistol squat. It doesn't limit me at all in anything (running, walking, climbing stairs,...) except footbag, where half of all tricks require that exact position of legs.

I tried resting it for a week but it didn't help. I didn't land badly or played through a pain or anything like that, it just happened out of the blue.

So if you have any idea what it might be, I'd love to hear any advice. I'll visit a doctor soon, I'm guessing it will mean no footbag for some time.

Go see a doctor. That is the only tip you need.

Crossing my fingers that everything is alright.

I've got something similar right now. I plan on a visit to my doctor soon. Keep me updated and I'll keep you updated. Has that knee been cracking/popping a lot?

Thank you, Asmus

Nick: Nope, there's nothing. No soreness, no locking, no swelling, no weakness, just a sharp, half second pain when I get to one certain position.

I'm visiting a doctor tomorrow so I'll update you. If you have more signs like cracking and/or swelling, it's most likely just a minor sprain. There's a lot of things that can go wrong in the knee and I've read about all of them hoping one would fit, but they don't.

What triggered yours? I did have a slightly longer session before I developed that pain, but it wasn't unusual or anything I haven't done in the past. Plus, there was no pain during the shred, otherwise I would've stopped immediately.

So I still have no idea what it is. The doctor had no idea, so I'll just play Counter Strike instead of Footbag for an unknown period of time. Hopefully weeks and not months.

Hopefully yours is just a minor sprain.

A few years ago I had some knee pain and went to the doctor, he didn't know what the problem was but sent me to physical therapy anyway. The physical therapist was able to tell that my patella(knee cap) wasn't tracking properly and so it was sitting a fraction of an inch out of place. She gave me some exercises to strengthen the muscle needed to pull it into place, and I was better in a few weeks. A general practitioner may not be the best person to see in this instance. If the pain persists for more than a week, I'd recommend seeing a joint/ knee specialist, or physical therapist.

I had a very similar experience with knee pain. Basically what it came down to was patella maltracking which was made worse by certain footbag moves. I remember not having any difficulties at all with day-to-day stuff but symp whirl on one side became instantly painful at one point in time. If you can see a good physical therapist I'd highly recommend it.

My doctor told me that any weird injury I get, I should probably assume it's to do with bad transportation of blood/nutrients through my body. I've had a hole in my heart and malfunctioning livers since I was born.
But because I can't do anything with that, I assumed it's not that. My injury got better, so in the end there's two options. It was either the first problem, and magically started getting better. Or it was that patella problem you guys were talking about, and I fixed it with some stretches.

I've tried many different stretches and kept track, these are the ones that fixed it (unless it was the heart from the beginning).

It could've been other things, or any of these combined:

- Warming up for a long time
- Doing shit ton of calisthenics
- Very light stretching before activity
- Doing a couple of slow squats through a very light pain (unlikely)
- Being warm during activity, my knee started getting better after I started wearing a hoodie while doing calisthenics outside, normally I'd just wear shirt/nothing in 5 degrees Celsius. I guess my body as a whole had an easier time to warm up that way
- If you do the stretches in those videos and then do a physical activity, you'll likely feel warmth in your knees, which I have never felt before. I think those stretches are just insanely good.

So that's it, maybe someone will benefit from this writeup in the future. Or if you have problems with knees, just try those stretches.
I am slowly starting to play footbag, got some painless Mirages today.
