Ambient, mellow, relaxing tunes and artists

Post by Seath » 06 Oct 2004 23:20

I've started to dabble into the realm of real mellow music of the electronic influence.

Id like some suggestions on good artists and such!

Hey Seath,
I've been into this kind of stuff for a while and I'm not sure how mellow you want to go but, here's a list anyway of what I recommend:

1. Bonobo- The Remixes (ninja tune)
2. DJ Shadow- Endtroducing (mo wax lable)
3. DJ Krush- Halonic (through sony)
4. DJ Cam- Substances
5. Plaid- Not for threes- give this a listen, it rules. 1 of my top 5. (warp records)
6. Colleen- Eveyone alive wants answers (wierd, but good)
7. Theivery Corporation- anything with their name on it. Beware the jazz remix album, good but unlike most of their stuff. (18th Street lounge)
8. Kruder & Dorfmeister- K&D session (K7 lable)
9. Tosca- Suzuki (i think, it's got a red cover, also K7)
10. Buddah Bar 1 & 2 mixed by Claude Challe
11. St Germain- Tourist (blue note lable, a bit housey nut also chilled out)
12. Peace Orchestra (K 7)

All this is down tempo, almost trip hop stuff. I'm not really into synths with wale noises though but all of these are really mellow.

Check out the record lable websites if you like any of the stuff. You'll find more. Wapr records is cool, a little out there (aphex twin's lable).

Hope you find 1 you like,
peace,
8)

Robert Miles was a pioneer in this genre. I heard a song from like '92 on sattelite radio the other day right next to stuff from 2002-4... It didn't sound dated at all.

William Orbit likes to remix classical songs, and does a lot of other good soothing ambient stuff.

You might also try Michael Andrews (Donny Darko Sndtrk). His stuff is more edgy and tense, but it's downtempo and lots of interesting pads and chords, similar in sound to ambient, but more dark.

Although not really ambient, I highly suggest Nightmares On Wax. They're so groovy... Mmm

dude, if you want ambient and mellow and relaxing, download some Nick Drake. It's not techno (quite the opposite; stripped down folk), but just give a few of the songs a try... you'll like it. Go for Cello Song, River Man, and Fly. Those are some of my favorites.

Does anyone know Eberhard Weber?

I suggest the album "Pendulum". It's wonderful ambient music.
Weber is an E-doublebass player who plays whole concerts solo.
Yes. solo. He has an array of delay effect machines, so he
plays a line, loops it and plays over it etc...The album is made
in the same way, and it's a marvellous chill-out album.

As well as the previous Jazz thread, I am way into Minimalist.
I recommend Steve Reich: Music for 18 Musicians, Octet:Music for Large Ensemble, any of his older stuff.
Very nice.
