Spin me like a Ceiling Fan

Post by C-Fan » 02 Feb 2009 09:05

I was reading through my blog the other day, and it struck me how disorganized my challenges were. I'd find things like a post in 2006 where I'd say "I'd like to hit blurry flurry before I retire," and then realize I didn't even think about that trick again for another 2 years. Other times I would focus on a goal so singlemindedly (dropless routine) that I wasn't good about keeping other goals on the radar.

That said, I figured it might help my progress if I had a separate thread where I could keep track of challenges.

For the most part I'm going to use this as a place where I challenge myself, though I am definitely open to other people challenging me. I reserve the right to pick and choose which challenges I want to work on. For those who don't know me, there's a lot of YT video of how I play in my blog, as well as on my YouTube channel (username: Ceilingf4n).

Some more relevant information in case you want to challenge me:

*My right knee isn't in great shape now, so I'm avoiding double dexes, blenders, and symposium with that leg. Keep that in mind for drills.
*If you challenge me to a drill, keep it to 8 contacts or less. I think I'd have trouble remembering more than that. So, 4 contact combo rpt would be the limit.
*I'm more interested in working on strings and interesting links than I am in big tricks or fearless at the moment.
*I would like to improve my spins, and my ability to use them interestingly in my game.

All my challenges will be listed in the second post of this thread. Completed challenges will be in the completed section along with the date of completion.

Wish me luck!

Had a really good session with NYFA on Saturday, where I tried a lot of my challenges and got some. I haven't decided yet whether to put up individual clips on YT, or try to get Age to put them all into a short, raw video.

I forgot to try the pdlo blubberman and the inspin clip challenges, but I tried everything else and had varying degrees of success.

Nuts, I thought it was "both sides" or bsos, and not repeat. My zooming isn't close to being good enough for this yet, but I will try to work up to it.

I'm still open for more challenges. I am mostly looking for stuff that works downtime tricks and spins. I'll try to hit Reid's challenge, but for the most part I'm not looking for triple dex links, or anything beyond two dexes for that matter. I'd also like to work my flip swirls.

That sounds fun. I think the hard part of that drill is just remembering it. That and the PSW-ripwalk that deep in a genuine string. But yeah, I'll add that to the challenges.

whoa reid! I thought "the drill" was a divine secret. I still haven't told anyone about it. I have it written on a napkin hanging in my room.

Ken, yeah I gave you one non repeat and one repeat so i could cover all the bases of difficulty. didn't know where u were at, and I know you said you wanted to work in spins creatively, so i auto thought zooming.

I dunno how good ur flip swirl is but I'd like to see swirl war.

Is that like ss symple swirl-far symple swirl repeat? If so, I hit that for the first time on Saturday. 8O Cosmic. I'll try and hit it again, and get more than 4 contacts.

Thought of a new challenge for me: spinning butterfly-spinning clipper-spinning osis repeat.

I've hit a bunch of my challenges so far, and I'm making good progress on others. I've highlighted two challenges that I completed off camera. I'm gonna wait til I release video with my other challenges before highlighting them too.

My next session will probably be on Saturday. I'll try for spinning mob and pdlo blubber then, as well as anything else y'all want me to try.

Update on my challenges:

1. Do less strong pdx mirages: I'm doing really well with this one. I usually bail to osis now, or do a PDLO instead.

2. Do more spinning osis and peeking osis, both sides. Not doing great with this one. I am spinning a lot more though.

3. Blubberman with pdlos. I don't know why I even made this a challenge initially. I don't really have any desire to work on my quantum sets. But now that its on the list, I feel obliged to try it a couple times a session.

4. Link 2 cool spinning tricks. Hit 2 combos which qualify, and both started with spinning whirl. I'd like to hit a combo which doesn't use spin whirl, but I wouldn't mind hitting a couple more even if it uses it. I tried to dust off my spinning ducking clipper to see if that could be usable, and the jury is still out.

5. FTB drill. I like this challenge, even though I don't see myself hitting it anytime soon. This is a good example of "path vs. destination." I don't even care if I hit the drill; practicing both halves every session should help my game.

6. Spinning mobius. I need to skool double spinning mirage more, and double spinning osis more. Neither is bad, but I'm not skooling either. I think I need to build my way up to this trick, rather than just take random stabs at it.

7. fog-pig-phx both sides, then repeat. Pretty easy on strong, but I don't have much interest in hitting shuffle challenges in general at this point in my career.

I'd love some more spinning challenges. Maybe not drills, but bsos stuff could be good. Something like: spin whirl-drifter-spinning osis bsos would be cool, for example.

Weird stuff, maybe?

spinning guay>neo ss refraction rpt
any dex into a front sole stall (no cheatsies)
20 whizz (from inside to op. inside)

Sorry if it's just too ridiculous.

I like that one Reid. I'll try it today.

The first and the last might hurt my bad knee, but I'll feel it out. The second sounds fun and do-able.

I called no cheatsies on the front sole stall. By that I meant you can't rest your leg on your other knee or anything like that. You wouldn't rest a clipper on your calf would you?

Challenge uncompleted

how about spinning clipper > merkon > spinning osis?

and are you interested in zooms or just regular spins? If so give these a try:
ducking osis > spinning osis rpt
gyro osis > osis rpt

Oh, I was wondering what you meant by that. Well, I liked the challenge with "cheatsies" anyway. I'm gonna lay off your other challenges for now because I'm worried how my knee will react to them.

max wrote:how about spinning clipper > merkon > spinning osis?
Way too easy. I'll add it to the challenges as a drill.

I guess I'm mostly looking for regular spinning challenges for now, and when they get better I'll work on zooming. Right now, only one zoom is any good, and even then it's not that strong.

Oh, and I added 3 videos to my completed challenges in the second post.

5 days without even looking at the internet. Refreshing. During that time I got in 3 shreds with Josh M and some Phoenix shredders and I finished a couple more challenges.

I hardly filmed at all, so I may try and re-hit them later on vid. With some of these challenges, I think it's a good idea for me to continue skooling them, even if I've hit them once already, just so I continue working those concepts. I may get in a light solo session tomorrow, so if you give me a challenge now I might give it a shot.

Ken, I think a great drill to learn spinning is the ducking clipper >spinning clipper [repeat] drill where each rotation of drill you add another spinning clipper each side.

I challenge you to get up to at least 5 spinning clippers of this drill (both sides). So... 40 contacts. If not, at LEAST to 4s (28 contacts)
