Martial Arts anyone?
Martial Arts anyone?
This semester I'm taking a Tae Kwon Do class through my university and I think I'm going to join the club. Though all we've really done so far is a butt-ton of cardio, it's more of a workout than I've had in a good while. It's strengthened my legs in the first two weeks we've had class and I can't wait to see where it can lead.
Anyone else participate in any forms of martial arts?
I took an Aikido class last spring semester but was nowhere near as physically strenuous. I feel like martial arts training can be a great cross training for footbag, and vice-versa. Plus it's always handy to know a martial art.

I was in Karate for 3 years when I was 7, got as far as green belt before I quit. Then I was in Tae Kwon Do for another 3 years when I was 14, and got as far as red belt before I quit to play school sports (which I eventually quit to play footbag instead ).
I definitely think that my martial arts training played a huge part in my footbag progress, and I would bet that footbag would do wonders for martial arts training as well (especially Tae Kwon Do).

I took Aikido for about 4 years. I feel like it helped me in footbag in two manners: First, in being more both sided than I naturally am and second, being able to learn more by watching videos/players than I naturally could. It's true that Aikido in most places is not a good cardio work out, but that's because it's a martial art, not an aerobics class. I also dabbled for a few months in BJJ and Daito Ryu.

I started out doing muay thai for about a year and a half, and a little bit of jiu jitsu. When i switched to a closer gym to my house I got sick of stand up because it was a newer gym and no challenges so I started to take up more and more jiu jitsu. I then started competing and took third in my first national NAGA tournament. Currently taking a break from training until summer, although i still go to the schools gym and grapple there once a week
Hi.
I agree that Martial arts will improve your game and vise versa.. Obviously the stretching aspect is huge for both and the balance is very important as well. I have taken Tae Kwon Do for 3 years and am in my 6th year and Black Belt in Kung FU Northern/Southern Styles. I also think that taking martial arts is a bit of a recovery for my body, because footbag can be very harsh on joints and muscles. I would recommend anyone to take Martial arts or Yoga along with their regular footbag routine.

Anything that forces you to move around and get exercise is a good cross trainer for footbag. I dunno about anything else, but judo is good for speed and strength (not so much flexibility).
