Judging of Events - Proposed change.

Post by BalinorNZ » 28 Apr 2005 21:58

Hey,

I would like to propose a change in the way the events are judged by the comunity.

The Problem:

The problem I have with the current system is that (generally) everyone casts their vote to the entry which is clearly the best.
This is fine for finding out which entry is the best, but what about 2nd 3rd 4th etc? What if I wanted to know exactly how my entry sized up to the rest of the competition?

Proposed solution:

Don't make each event thread a poll.
Instead include instructions to make a post with each forum users judgment in the following format:
1. Jorden Moir
2. Jerry Springer
3. Opera Winfrey
4. Tom Mosher
5. Nic Bathgate

The host of the competiton (Tom or one of his cronies) records the results.
The rankings are determined this formula:
The sum of the frequency of each position(1st 2nd etc) * the position number.
The lowest score gets overall first, 2nd lowest gets overall 2nd etc.
The Event host would keep an up to date overal score for each player at the start of the thread.

For example to calculate what rank Nic Bathgate would get overall:
1st rankings: 1 >> 1*1 = 1
2nd rankings: 0 >> 2*0 = 0
3rd rankings: 2 >> 3*2 = 6
4th rankings: 6 >> 4*6 = 24
5th rankings: 13 >> 5*13 = 65
Total score: 96

Pros and Cons:

> This would be a great way to actually get a ranking instead of just an overall winner.
> It would also mean people would actually have to watch all the videos carefully so they can rank them.
> It would take a little more effort from the voters and alot more from the event host.
> It would give the compeditors and the comunity a much better idea of how each entry adds up to the rest

What are your thoughts? Should this be implemented for the April sick3 and sick1?

Mosher, if you don't have the time to implement a system like this I would be happy to do the calculations and keep the results updated for you.

I think it's a cool idea except for the fact that somebody has to calculate the results - which I wouldn't want to do, but maybe somebody ie. you or tom would be happy to do that.
