2 square rules?
2 square rules?
I hear there is 2 square at NYJ, and will be an event at worlds in the future. So... what are the rules? Significant strategy diffs with 4 square?

From what I remember Ianek and Steve told me here is some of the rules.
-A point is scored every round. (unlike old two square rules of server only scores)
-All lines but the center are IN
-Serve behind the line (think Net almost)
-Unlike four square, you do not need to serve nicely to them.
-Must return the footbag at before four contacts (so three contacts are okay)
-Though if the player kicks to footbag are you and it hits you and you save it, then it does not count as one of three contacts.
As the old two square rules that still follow, most of the other two square rules have moved over also.
-No stall attacks, so stalling is ok but serving/returning is not alright.
The only rule I am not sure they changed is if you have to kick knee high or hip high. I think Ianek would be able to clarify whatever else I missed.
ie;
Hope that helps

There are 2 different sets of rules for 2 square. In Chicago, we still play by the older rules which are more similar to 4-square and the new rules Ianek has developed which has elements of Net. In both sets, it's still a foul to spike, pass too low, contact another player in their square or step into their square. Players do not change squares after every point.
Some of the major changes under the new rules (that I can remember):
-Server gets to kick serve from behind his half of the court as they do in net. This is a huge advantage for a player with great touch and placement. Previously, the server would give a nice hand toss to his opponent giving the receiver an advantage. Under the change, the server gets the first shot. Serves have to peak at or above the receivers waist.
-If the bag hits any of the 2 side lines or the back line that is considered IN. Hitting the middle line that divides the court is still considered OUT. This opens up the court a little, more room to kill. Defenders used to the old rule (where all lines are 'out') may have trouble adjusting and may lead to giving up a few easy points away early in the game.
-There is a 3 contact maximum per side. A player hitting the bag 4 times in a row is out. However, if the the bag hits the upper body of a player first (intentionally or not) this will not be considered one of the contacts. This quickens the pace of the game so players can't "camp out" and take forever to make a shot.
It seems like we will be using the older set of rules for this years NYJ 2-square comp. I'll post those rules and general strategies when I get the when chance

2 square will have judges and tattooing someone could get a player called for unsportsmanlike conduct.
EDIT:
Checking/tackling another player while they are out of their square will be a foul for the same reason

I have been known to check and tackle at pick-up games. But this will be a foul (or even grounds for disqualification depending on the severity of the contact) at the NYJ 2S comp.

Most of the 4 square rules still apply in 2-square
-Only the player that serves can score a point for the round
-First player to 11 points wins
-No spiking, passing too low, contacting another player in their square or stepping into their square.
-A player is out if the bag contacts their arm below the elbow.
-Players can leave their square to save the bag
-A player is out if he hits the bag on the line or out of bounds
Rules unique to 2-square
-Call your score and your opponents score before serving
-Players stay in their respective squares the whole game, there is no servers square to rotate into.
-No upper body or stall attacks.
-No voting. In casual games players can either accept the foul or both can agree to replay the point.
Rules that may be added for the NYJ comp
-No checking
-Referees will call the fouls
-Referees will call the scores before each round
2S is faster paced than regular 4S. You need to really focus on limiting the number of mistakes that you make on the court. Committing too many fouls, particularly early on, can cost you a game. Defensively, go for everything. Take a swing at every pass near the lines unless its flying way out of bounds. It's better to play it safe. You're going to see plenty of kick fakes in every game so challenge every pass that comes into your square. On offense, limit the number of high arcing easy shots that you give and exploit weak sides.

It's a borrowed hockey term. In terms of 2-square/4-square, checking is making contact with a player that is out of their square, generally with the intent to disrupt, distract or discourage them from making a save from out of bounds. It's a pretty broad term and can mean anything from standing directly in between a player and the bag they're running after or a full blown tackle.

Here are short rules that we used during Worlds2009:
2 Square Rules
Court:
-Side and back lines are IN the square.
-Middle line is OUT of both squares.
List of fouls:
-Service contact over square foul.
-Step on back line serve foul.
-Low serve foul. Waist height.
-Middle line drop foul.
-4 hit in a row foul.
-Spike attack foul.
-Low attack foul. Knee height.
-Stall attack foul. Should go up.
-Bag freeze foul.
-Environment contact foul.
-Arm contact foul.
-Players contact over a square foul.
-Step on the opponent square foul.
It’s ok for players to:
-Use body hits and stalls.
-Go over opponent’s square. (with arms, legs, etc.)
-Go out-of-bound.
-Attack from out-of-bound.
-Attack through any lines. (middle, side, back)
-Fake a contact.
-Hide the bag from opponent’s view.
Refereeing:
-After a drop, if the referee can’t give a call, the exchange is replayed – Hackoff.
-Only 5 automatic fouls can stop a rally:
-arm contact
-environment contact
-step on opponent’s square
-4th contact.
-all serve fouls, except low serve.
-When other fouls occur, players keep playing until the bag drops. Then the 2 contact rule is used: After receiving the bag from a foul, a player will void the foul by contacting the bag twice.

For pickup games, it really does not matter. Players can just agree to somebody starting off or use the tried and true method of Rock Paper Scissors. Maybe you can get creative and see who can spit the farthest. It's pretty informal
Around here we generally let the lower seeded player serve first then in subsequent games the loser/challenger gets the serve. Edit:I would assume tournament rules would be similar
