Forum "likes"

Post by Muffinman » 28 Jun 2012 10:39

Is adding "likes" like on Facebook feasible? I've seen other forums with this feature:
http://www.teambeachbody.com/connect/me ... e/19600726

I was thinking this might be particularly useful for forums like videos and Tricks and Tips for those people who never actually post but read everything and would otherwise gives a thumbs-up on a Facebook link or something. For example, in Trick Tips, a new player could be asking for advice on a specific trick and another new player gives bad advice. Then someone else gives realy good advice, even though he's maybe not a well-known player, but well-known players can "like" the comment without having to post, giving it higher credibility and therefore more reason to follow that advice.

For Videos, often people don't comment in video threads even though they are watching and appreciating the videos. A "like" option could be a way to show their appreciation when the video-maker would otherwise feel perhaps like effort was wasting sharing the video with so few comments. You feel good about your video if you have likes even without any words. Seeing 500 views and only 3 comments is so sucky.

Thoughts?
Is it something that could be easily added?

Modified runs on phpBB 2.something. This is old and outdated software. There is phpBB 3 out there, but it's somewhat non-trivial to upgrade to it. I've tried. Migration takes forever because the database is huge. It's totally doable, but ...

While we're running phpBB 2 and everything is working right, it would be my recommendation to stick with it as is. If we upgrade to 3, then we could look at utilizing another plugin like this one, but we really should leave the 2.0 software alone at this point. I agree that it would be cool have 'like' buttons, but it's really not worth the hassle right now.

I should create a "do we upgrade to phpBB 3?" thread. I just haven't had the time or particular desire to put it up as I basically have to volunteer my time. I'm fine doing that, the timing just hasn't been right recently.

One thing at a time ;) Ask again (maybe in a few weeks) when everything else has been settled and I'm not totally burned out on doing the work. This transition has not been an easy one for me. This is probably doable now.

Did you notice there's a new "Friend & Foe" concept baked into things?

I tried to do this today, but it failed. I can probably make it work when I have to figure out why it didn't work. I don't know when that'll be. It seems simple enough.

So, um, yeah. That happened.

I'm still working on it. For now, you can't see who upvoted what. That'll change. I just need to figure out the UI and stuff. I wrote it from scratch, so there might be bugs or something not working right.

At some point soon, post authors will get an email when their post has been liked ... maybe. I'd have to make it so people could opt out of such notifications, and that makes it more complicated. Baby steps here.

Feedback?

I'm not sure it's working, unless I'm having a Monday Afternoon moment (It's Tuesday but yesterday was a public holiday in Australia). I can see the thumbs with the number, but can't see anyway of adding my vote. I've tried clicking everywhere :P

Oh, I can upvote my own posts. Just nobody else's.

Edit; Also it would be good if it were possible to remove upvotes. If I accidentally click on that on a post that I don't like, I'll be mad :P Thanks though, I think this is a great addition to the forum.

You've definitely got to be logged in first. And I think I'll need to add a loading indicator, as perhaps you're not being patient enough. Click it and give it a sec. and the number should change ... ?

It's definitely only working on my own posts.

More testing is obviously required :) Looking into it now.

Hmm. Yes. I knew there'd be stuff that I didn't think of. I know this can be done, but my brain is fried for now. I'll tackle it soon.

I think the icon should be a high five and should be called props instead of likes.

Great idea Asmus.

I had a few other thoughts;

1. A stat in the little profile below post count saying "Props" or "Likes" or whatever they're called, with a total tally.
2. Not being able to like/prop your own posts.
3. A page where you can see a history of who liked your posts, and perhaps something next to the bit that says how many new messages you have that says how many new likes you've had (preferably without any kind of email or pop up notification).

I have no idea how hard those are to implement, but I thought I'd through my ideas out there anyway. Thanks again Allan for making this happen :)
