Modified Header Banners

Post by Allan » 05 Mar 2014 19:10

Hey.

A few times over past couple of years, I've added banners to modified for special projects, and I've always really liked the concept. I think it's been well received. I would like to make such a feature permanent, but I need help from people who want to be included. To this end, I am looking to gather "applications" for inclusion into a header banner.

If folks who are working on a footbag-related project want to be featured in the rotation, they should post the graphic & a link as a reply in this thread. If nobody objects (over an arbitrary period of time), I'll add it to the queue, and it will randomly appear in the header (every page load is--theoretically--a different banner from the selection).

I'm still hashing out the technical details, but one of my primary considerations is mobile. Despite the fact that the default theme doesn't currently properly support mobile browsers, I am looking for graphics which nonetheless will be oriented to fit that "viewport." Combine this with the fact that modified will be getting a logo in the not-so-distant future (and will thus need real estate in the header), and I am looking for graphics which are 300px wide by 100px high. This isn't very big. I'll look at ways in which I could incorporate two versions of the banner (one for desktop, one mobile), but the default for submission should be 300x100.

I'd like to keep this is professional as possible, but I can foresee editorial issues happening. Maybe I'd write some sort of formalized user interface with moderator group control (like I did for Badges) so that I wouldn't be the gatekeeper. I dunno. We'll see how it evolves.

Hey! I love this idea. :D I resized parts of the posters I made for the Sport/Life events to fit this size.

@EllenFrancis I'm going to link the first one to: http://sportslashlife.com/sportlife-pre ... tbag-tour/
The second to: http://sportslashlife.com/sportlife-pre ... challenge/
And the third to: http://sportslashlife.com/dzem-jam-gdan ... ournament/

Does that make sense? They can link anywhere ...

I didn't even think about that. But yes, that definitely works.

I think these will be a great help for any footbag projects. Great idea to have something consistent up there. Cheers.

Done.

The Facebook Groups banner is stupid. It'd be cool if someone redid it.

EDIT: For that matter, the badges banner is terrible too. But that'll all change when Kevin Hogan is done with his badge designs :)

Was thinking this would be a wicked way to make new members feel more included from the get-go…

If we had a little spot around the top of the page that was linked to new members and throughout the week, it says "The Footbag community welcomes you, __________!" And when we see this, several of us could be designated "reach-out'ers" and message them a personal welcoming and maybe find out what location they are in and hook them up with players in their area much more easily this way.

I mean, hell, I'll volunteer to be a "reach-out'er" since I already do it anyway :P

Anz' Tricks is in. I made one for IFPA. It's not good. Why can't I be good at design?

Could you remove the PSU Jamps banner from the rotation since it is over? It was really cool seeing it pop up whenever I visited Modified.

Sorry this took so long. I think I might build an expiration function into the code ...

Sure, no problem! Need any more banners made? I think I can probably make some in my spare time if people like my style.
Thinking of making one that is just an open invitation for people to come visit/crash at the PSU Club year round - would that be an acceptable use of the space?

Took the Gdansk Jam banner down. It's too bad that's over; I enjoyed that graphic immensely :)

Glad you liked it! All the Eurotour stuff is over now. :( I am quite sad to see it go, too.

Modified Header Videos

Post by Allan » 09 Sep 2014 17:05

I'm modding this so that it can support videos.
  • Jay's 300fps
    Silencer
    Ken's Summer 2014
    Joulu-Jupe 3.0
    Taishi in Paris
    Jedi Landes
Suggest more, please.

I was thinking that any video that gets more than, say, 3 props in the videos forum could get "promoted" to the rotation. Maybe that's a low number ...

If the video authors wanted to make custom banners for the videos, I'd use those; otherwise, I'll just use a screen from the video with the title overlaid.

Basically, once I get the logo from PegLegHolly I'll be redoing the header entirely and will add in the banners/videos then.
