Worlds 2013 Updates

Post by C-Fan » 25 Jul 2013 09:09

Figured it'd be good to have a separate thread where people can post updates on what's happening at Worlds. This way updates and logistics can be separated, so talk about Jindra's crazy combos isn't overlapping with people looking for roommates, etc.

I'm not sure what kind of internet access I'll have while in Montreal, but I'll post updates here when I can.

For people who are there already...what's going on?

So I will be uploading video from the competition as fast as my computer/internet allow, I hope to have all videos up by the end of each day. The first video, however, is something that a lot of people who were at the event missed, as it occurred right as everyone was leaving/had left for dinner.

Ken posting from Evan's computer.

Worlds venue is pretty nice, as is the UQAM housing. Freestyle is very small this year, which makes comp pretty low key and hanging out feel like a college dorm. A bunch of us got byes for Circle semis, and today there were 2 pools to determine the remaining semis competitors. Tomorrow is routines round one. Its like 4 pools of 5, and only one cut per pool. Pretty generous. Circle pools have been posted. Evan, Jindra, Honza and Aleksi have top seeds. I'm in Aleksi's pool, and Rene is in Evan's pool. Should be fun to watch.

Poker game at the UQAM tonight was fun. I got knocked out when Benulis, Chrissy, Chris Dean and Drew remained. Hoping some 4square will happen too.

Event venue is indoors, so the rain hasn't mattered much. Mostly good weather so far though. Tam tams was fun. Johnny hit nuke grifter on my request.

More later hopefully.

Women's semis circle is up - There were no eliminations, the results only determined seeding for the finals.

Double what Anssi said. Also, more sideline footage of Steve is definitely acceptable.

No Milan this year?

I liked Honza's and Jindra's routines the most.

Thanks for filming and posting this stuff. It's amazing and fun to see these things basically as they're happening.

As for Open Freestyle:
Really, wow all around. Everybody puts on a good show and some solid performances.

The ones that stand out to me:
Jindra: Smooth, solid. He looked really controlled.
Felix: Same - everything looked solid and smooth. Nice routine.
Rene: I like his style. Fun to watch. Good stuff.
Scott: I gotta tell you - SOLID showing from the old skool. The integrated double bag work really stands out.

Also great:
Ken: A really solid performance. Hit cues, went with the music. Challenging stuff.
Aleksi: His Open routines are getting better, really starting to flow and feel like a performance.

WTF:
Jan: Seriously. He's like a robot, if robots could look smooth and graceful and like they're having a really fun time effortlessly hitting stuff in a routine I couldn't imagine hitting on my best day. I've finally figured one of the reasons his routines look so good: Even when I know he's pacing himself, it's integrated seamlessly. The "slow" parts of his routine don't look slow. It never looks like he's trying to take a break or catch his breath, it all just flows so nicely.

All of that being said, I do not envy the judges. EVERYBODY (even the ones I didn't mention) put on a helluva qualification round. Maybe the turnout is low - but the level of play is not!

Oh... and the ladies, holding it down! You all rock!

Wish I could be there with you all, but my ID required to travel was delayed, still waiting on it, and now I can't make it up in time :(. Loving all the footage! Gogo Evan Gatesman!
