Hacky Sack

Post by Jeremy » 23 Feb 2005 02:22

I'm just curious as to how many people really care if you call our sport footbag or hacky sack. Personally I don't care what's it called - and can have just as much fun whatever people want to call it - but I know some people make a big deal out of the name.

Does it really matter?

I made a big deal about it when I started playing, but I dont really care to much anymore, ive realised that alot of people are not so welcoming of the idea that hackey is different to footbag and footbag is an actual sport that people compete in as they are to the fact that i'm 'really good at hackey sack'.

If they wana think im just really good at hackey thats cool, all the more reason for them to wana be good at it to, being good at hackey isnt as threatening as devoting yourself to a sport which is what we are all really doing i guess.

heheh you made a deal of it when i called it 'hacky sack' when i was talking to that chick in Newcastle, Jeremy :P

' I dont play Hacky sack, i only play Footbag.' - Jeremy

heheheh

i dont really care that much, most people dont know about Footbag and even if you tell them, they just try to get at you by calling it Hacky sack, or trying to argue with you that they have the right answer.
Most of the time i cant be stuffed with them, they waste my time.

Its pretty much a name we are stuck with now, not much can be done at this stage, until footbag suddenly explodes in popularity

i think it isnt a real big deal. i grew up just kicking it around, and i got totally stuck saying i was "hacking." even now that i actually footbag it, i still am stuck in the habit of calling it hacking, when i dont remember not to.

I only use it to be playful.

I would never call what I do hackysacking but I might jokingly say to another footbag player "Hey you wanna go play some hacky sack with me??" since they'd know I was just being goofy.

That's what I would say probably, to be honest. I actually do have an
issue with it, because of the associations people have with hacky sack.
Sometimes people come up to me and ask me in a a taunting way: "
Are you still playing this 'hackysack'?" And I know exactly what they mean
by it. That's why I like to inform people that there's a world beyond
a crocheted bag, a school yard and a bunch of stoned kids. Because
this is what the majority of people think of when they think of Hacky Sack.
And that's not what I'm doing.

Hacky Sack for me means plain Circle Kicking without having any
knowledge of Footbag Freestyle.

edit: this may come off a bit harsh, but it isn't really - it's just that
I'm making a difference where needed - with the people that don't
know our sport yet.

I agree with Bjoern.

Also, Hacky Sack sounds like a toy or kids' game when Footbag sounds like a sport.

Footbag IS the sport yet hacky sack is just a brand OF footbag.

Anyways, I've been trying to call it footbag more than 'hacky sack' as I don't kick around a wham-o bag but an abshire so it's not a hacky sack.....and from my point of view, I think that the term carries with it stereotypes........but I dig those stereotypes........meh.

Sometimes I call it foosbag.

It is annoying when people start calling it hacky sack just to try and bug me though. Some people can be so immature when they're trying to impress their friends.

I recognize it as freestyle footbag, where freestyle is what I do and footbag is what I use.

Whenever I'm talking to someone who isn't knowledgeable about freestyle I just say "Hey, want to go kick?" and if they are interested in tricks and whatnot, I open the branch and say "It's actually called footbag". If I don't get any sly remarks / ignorance from them I follow up with the ole 'hacky sack is a brand name, yadda yadda Wham-O blah blah' talk.

If they don't catch on when I ask them to kick, I follow up with "want to hack?". That's about as close as I will get to comparing hacky sack with freestyle.

I agree with Bjoern. Like he said, to me hacky sack is kicking a huge crocheted bag from the local skate shop or store, where the coolest trick you can do it based on how you kick it....like a "jester", or the weirdest place you can stall it like neck, stomach, back, knee, etc.

And that's what everyone knows. Everyone.

If I can, I try to convey that what we do is not hacky sack. I don't hate hacky sack...me and my footbag buddies do it before each session usually. But what I HATE is the refusal to realize that what we do as atheletes (yes athetles...that's a hard concept for most people) is a sport...not something to do when you have nothing better to do.

My legs don't hurt the morning after a session of hacky sack...no that's footbag.
I don't think about hacky sack all the time, I think about footbag.
I don't practice hacky sack...who does? I practice footbag cause when I hit a 20 move combo it feels a heck of alot better than kicking it 250 times (my consecutive record) because I was bored.

Most of the time, when I say footbag people get this wierd expression on thier face like htey're thinking "What the hell is that?", so I say hacking so that they get an idea of a P.O.S. knitted bag, then I bust out my bag and hit some basic 2 adds. If they are interested past that then I'll talk to them more. Generally I say footbag to people who knows what it is, and then I get htose few people who know what footbag is and correct me when I say hacking, which is funny becuase I can usually tell is someone shreds.

Uhm... In Finland no-one knows what the hell is hacky sack. For the most of the people it's a hard, random English word. "Does it mean kicking and hitting someone's testicles or what?"

Hacky sack a.k.a. circle kicking is just footbag here. If you can do freestyle footbag - you're a semi-god. (At least here where I live, might be different in the Helsinki and Turku areas).

I think that the "push" from everyone should be footbag. This same thing happened with Rollerblade when it got big. Now how often do you hear Rollerblade on TV? Not very often, I always see inline skate this and inline skate that. I personally dont care and I dont think WHAM-O is going to go nuts sueing anyone, but the "sport" is footbag.

Hacky sack, footbag, freestyle, kickin, playin hack, nobody cares as long as your shreddin! Edit: To me hack is slang for hacky sack and hacky sack is a brand name Under Wham-O who i cant really talk shit abbout because they gave us 500 bucks for two years. :D They also hired Chad D. as an intern and they took designs from another "real footbagger" alan petersen to make all kinds of designs he came up with (i think he was restricted with materials used). I think they took the designs strait from Alan Petersen who is also a "real footbagger"

Is it just me or are alot of "real footbaggers" promoting 92 panel dreams and legends and alot of crap on thier sites or whatever that isn't even good for shred stating they are "proKickers" on thier site? At least wham-o is fake on purpose and isn't perpetrating. Anyway thats an entirely different subject.

I think Wham-O has worked with "real footbaggers", (Chad D. Alan Petersen) they just simply see no return for some reason.

So basically "real footbaggers" are putting it on Wham-O to pay for the neccassary funds to truely promote "real footbag" to the entire world, And until they do they are fake wham-o destructors of footbag. Personally, I dont think it should be on one company to popularize a product rather the people who are playing the game.. I must resort to skating as an example: Pro Skating did not come from Powell Perelta rather Powel Perelta came from Pro Skating... (Powell perelta was the most popular board company in the 80s who hired the bones brigade, tony hawk, rodney mullen, etc.).. There were alot of shitty skateboard companies before the pros started to become popular and advanced the technology (Nash boards, clay wheels) etc. It wasn't until the technology and "busting" got good that anything changed..
