Edit: Ok I finished the bag. I have to get batteries for my digicam to show you guys. It is pretty good looking. It has a few mess ups but its good for my first 32.

One quick question...Are the bleed holes all the places where the hexes touch (Except for the ones holding it together)?

Edit 2: Tom if you could email me or post the patterns you use that would be super. e.luke.andrews@gmail.com I think my bag is a little small...

1) Yes, bleed holes are the gaps left where the hexagon edges touch, but are not stitched.

2) I sadly have lost my set of templates, I need to make up a new set. (I think mine are a little small too)

ok, i got the hang of stitching a couple of 12 panel bags out of old pants, i got the template from footbag.org and it shrunk when i printed it so the bags came out small. But i remain optomistic and i want to try 32 panels.

first question, should i make my own patern? and does anyone have suggestions , i have seen many variations in the sizes of the hexagons.
should all sides be equal?

also, 2nd question was asked earlier, but i didn't understand completely, mosher wrote that the hexes dont get stitched together, but there is clearly a seam between the hexes on all bags, are you saying to stitch the hexes to the pents first, then go back and stitch the hexes together?

ok, well im going to try with this shrunken pattern for now, but i would like to hear some response..

Traditional "hexagons" are shaped like triangles with their tips cut off. So there are 3 short sides and 3 long sides. The ratio in the lengths of these sides effects the performance of a bag in various ways depending on the stitching technique.

You can make the long sides of the hexes the same length as the edges of the pents or a bit longer if you want.

ok, i finished the bag, the material i used was micro-suede and i filled it with poly pelets,
the material is soft, but stretchy, so the next one i am going to make a little bit smaller, this one turned out to be about the size of a raquetball. i have no comparison to other footbags because the only one i have besides surf shop croched is a kanga sandbag that was eaten by my girlfreinds dog. but im pleased with the finished product, thanks for all the help.

during stitching i tried to follow mosher's advice : dont sew the hex's attatch them to the pents, and so on.. i found that i had to do a lot of extra work in the end attatching the hexes together to close all of the holes.. is this normal? why not attatch the hexes after the first pent?

p.s. im going to try to get a picture up later

You stitch the hexagons at the edges, while you are stitching the pentagons

my hexagons had equal edges, im going to modify the pattern to make the hexes more triangular like in the picture. still working on the picture..

I'm trying to stitch a four panel from an old t-shirt. SOOOOO hard. I already wasted one panel by cutting it all lopsided.

EDIT: Here is my finished new T-shirt bag: "Junior".

It's tiny. And made out of the Daniel Botkin four panel pattern posted earlier. I filled it with rice. It's pretty nice. Basically no "break-in" needed as far as I can tell. But I don't know about any of that stuff anyway. But I did it!!!

so far ive been practicing stitching some 4 panels( sandman style) with some cool material from hobby lobby. My first 2 were stitched well but too small, the one i made tonight is good sized, but where i make the panels meet is messed up. but they all stall like a dream. Ill make a couple more better ones for school and then move on to 8's or 12's, then on to 32's.

Within the last 2 nights my stitchimg abiliti has increased alot( unfortunatly my spelling and grammer are getting worse

)

fabricland its called crushed panne, they bring in a lot of it near christmas because people use it to sew dresses for little girls

i know this has been discussed many numerous times, but im searching for a cheaper alternative to ultrasuede light. so was there any consensus regarding 'microsuede?' look at this stuff, tell me what you think (im also thinking of ordering a swatch of it for reference)

The shop that i buy stitching stuff from has Micro Suede. It's not ideal because it is thicker than Ultra suede and it is woven, which means it frays and it is pain to use.

To try it out, you might not need to order it, just go to a shop that sells upholstery stuff. You could make a nice cushion with it, but probably not a nice bag.

Here's something I thought I may share...

I just took a metal nail file to a glover's needle and sharpened it. I tried to fashion it so it was almost a little samurai sword in shape. It's flying throught the facile now, and also my finger on the first initial test stitch, but that's ok. I know better now. I don't need to use as much pressure as I did when I stitched with a traditional glover's needle.

So where do you tie off then? Do you tie a knot from the loose ends of the string you used to sew the entire 'flower'? Do you tie that knot between the first two hexes where you started off?

Lol I know it's been 2 months since this post, but I'm starting to really get into stitching now that I found a cool fabric store nearby that sells facile. It's fun!
