I could make it to Binghamton... like anybody else, it depends alot on when.

Have you ever been to a competition before, Dave? Have you hosted one? They can be quite alot of work. The more competitive formats you hold, the more work it is. And alot of the time, trying to fit too many different kinds of competitions into a single weekend makes it more work then play even for the competitors. Some of the best one or two day long events I've been to had exactly ONE competiton format, and the rest of the time was just devoted to jamming. You might want to consider this option for your first event.

Anyway, don't forget to tell Isilwar about this. BURN on you midwestern guys! We have such a plethora of jams here in the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast. Booyah.

dave,

can jams / tournaments be a lot of work? yes. but they are doable, and it's not rocket science. and it's good that you've got kyle there, you and he can do it together.

you need the following things:

a venue
someplace to be at night
crash space
host hotel for those that can afford it
consistant contact info (your phone will be ringing ALL weekend)

There's a great thread at the top of this forum with all the pertinent info you need. you can also contact me via AIM (matthewL329) to talk about shit. Also, I can help you with things like judging and scoring.

basically, the most important thing for a jam is to have 1 or 2 people who do something besides stand around saying, "what next? what next? what do we do?" you need decision makers, and you need to make sure your bases are covered ahead of time. if you play it smart, you can pull this off inexpensively. You just have to be creative. get in touch if you need help.

First step: find a date now that works for you some time later in the summer. make sure it doesn't coincide with a major holiday or another major jam so as not to shorten the list of attendees for either event.

once again, get in touch if you need help, and someone to sponsor your event with a prize bag ;)

I thought i already posted here but i guess not. I would for sure be interested in coming to an event in Binghamton it's only like two hours away from me. Just pick a date and secure a spot and i'll most likely be there.

Binghamton is in a pretty central spot when you consider all the surrounding footbag playes. I would come if it's on the right weekend. Take Matt's advice and check when other events and stuff are scheduled.

I think it would work best in the fall, and your best bet for a venue is on SUNY Binghamton's campus during that semester. You might need a recognized student organization to reserve a gym/conference room/cafetorium for you, like a juggling club. That's what I did, it wasn't very hard.

Go for it. Freestylers will come if all the essentials are taken care of and there are good prizes to tempt them.

Prizes Shmizes. I don't play footbag strictly to win competitions, and I don't enter competitions strictly to win money or things. If the timing works for me I'd come regardless of competitions or prizes.

In my opinion, you need exactly two things to have a good footbag event: a good place to play, and footbag players. All the other stuff, like t-shirts and prizes and whatever, they're mostly superfluous. Well, having some place to have a little party in the evening is nice. Still, like I was saying, the first and most important thing is to have a decent place to play that you're certain you're not going to get kicked out of.
