Old players unite!

Post by Rieferman » 06 Feb 2008 10:21

Ha ha ha.. Couldn't resist.

Who besides me is 30 years or older and still playing actively?

I'm 31 now and play 5 times per week. Started hacking in (say) 1995 or so, and got more serious a few years later. Only recently (past 6 months) have I really started trying to actually systematically learn the right way to play.

Oh, and all you guys that are between the two age groups, start your own damn thread.

I played with Pete Irish last week, and he's ripping it up.

I turn 28 in 2 months, and Bevier turned 28 a few months ago. Lon is also mid-late 20s and still ripping it up. Oh, and Sebastien has to be around this age too.

Now I wonder who are the best 19xx players in the world.

I shudder to think where I fall in 1983.

33, and TRYING to play alot, but God-Damn-It !!! they keep hitting me with more special projects at work that are requiring LOTS of over-time. Now, I like making some extra money - its good for all kinds things - but all work and no play makes Jon an ANGRY boy.

And before this, I was just starting to make some good head-way last month, getting in some good practice, starting to feel like I was on a path towards getting in shape, when I had a stupid little accident and broke my damn toe :x

And I already know of something big on my schedule that will mostly prevent me from doing any real playing for at least the first week of March...

The fun never stops, damn it.

Well, at least now Reiferman's given me a place to bitch and moan about it, and I'm grateful for that -- I needed to vent.

You are probably not a young shredder if...

-the 90's where when you started playing footbag, not when you started life.

-the first footbag video you've ever seen was on a VHS cassette. It was probably Raw Shred or Tricks of the Trade.

-you've had to wait forever and a day to watch a 3MB vid because of a freakin' 56k modem.

-you've called another footbagger using a large cumbersome device with a cord attached to it.

-you remember a time when footbag was mostly discussed in person.

-you were on the old footbag.org discussion list when discussing in person wasn't enough.

-you've read or own a copy of Footbag World or Kickers Quarterly.

-you remember when Lavers only came in white nylon mesh upper with either blur or green trim/sole (that damn sole was heavier but lasted longer). Before they came in different materials and colors. Before Chinas.

-family and work are just a little more important right now. Maybe.

-someone mentioned Chicago, your first thought was Matt Churney.

-you remember a time when a list of people that had hit Nemesis did not exist.

-you remember when being able to hit a trick on one side was ok and didn't give a shit about form.

-you play net now (it's getting late...)

32, been kicking a bag in some way, shape or form since 1990. I'm an incredible hacker, was a mediocre shredder, a 4-square fanatic and now a net noob. If I'm not working, biking, taking photos, or spending time with my nieces than I'm playing footbag.

37, I played hacky sack a lot in HS/college- just now getting into basic freestyle as much time as I can squeeze in between work and the kids.

I can remember when the first 8 panel hacky sack (jammer) came out.

Yeah Zeke, I can totally relate to your post. Had a good laugh.

I kept waiting for you to mention pass the pigs. And "foot bucks".

God, and this exact point is what I've been trying to recover from for the last 6 months as I re-learn how to play:
-you remember when being able to hit a trick on one side was ok and didn't give a shit about form.
You should write a book, I always love your posts on various topics.

You are an old player if:

- When you competed open you only had to hit 2 5 add moves to break the world record
- 30 second shred was an informal event you had to be invited to play
- What's BAP?
- Tim Kelly kicked in your circle
- Guilting was expected in open circles
- You could count all the open players on one hand
- The tournament you attended was mostly net
- You kicked with a JUICE or TWISTED footbag
- Paul Munger sold you a bag
- Ryan who?
- Rubberman was only hit on one side, considered extremely rare and PIMP (still pimp ;))
- Dimitry taught you how to play footbag
- You only had to speak French and English to communicate to the World of Footbag
Go out and shred already.

oooh, a twisted, those rocked ! I miss those old cole rainbows !

You might be old if you remember how dope the cole rainbow footbag was.

Great lists so far.

Correction:
-Shred was a 45 second, invitation only event, and you were expected to drop.
