So my computer died and it's been about two weeks of messing around with Dell, and it's still not fixed, and it may never be fixed. The story of how it died is somewhat hilarious if it manages to be fixed, but I think not a story to post publicly.
I may have to get a new one at some point, which sucks, but I suppose now they're cheaper and better than ever, and i'll probably need one whatever I do in the future. But that's a roundabout way of saying I've managed to play a couple times since the last post but haven't gotten around to talking about it.
Essentially, the new job is sapping most of my time and energy so I try to make the most of days off and days when I have energy and I'm not too busy, but I've only managed like a couple sessions a week of about an hour each. Bummer, but once school comes around I smell daily sessions. I have class 2-6 every day, so much time for activities!
In any case, recent highlights include
Manies of strings over 30 and 40 contacts, I normally start with going for long strings after a bit of warm up, and that's been a blast. Essentially I can do standard tiltless for about as long as I want and then when I'm bored around 30 I start getting risky and then drop, but I'm psyched I have the basics pretty consistent.
fear>ss fear rpt, that's getting more comfortable again
taps and atomsmashers midstring
mirage>gyro toe>rpt x 6 contacts
ducking/diving is getting easier, as well as spinning (gyro ss mir is pretty easy now!)

last string today started with a real nice pdx whirl to about twenty contacts of bops and guiltless linked with a couple legovers and clippers and such. It felt really good to see progress in trick selection when I was trying for it.

Essentially, I'm slowly getting back all I lost in about a year off, but with a different attitude now. Instead of just kinda throwing myself at tricks, I've been focusing on how my body should move, where the bag should go, breaking it down differently in my head. I'm pretty sure the change came from the season of snowboard instructing where I had to take something I "know" how to do and play with every little part of it to see how to make it better. It's been great when I saw I was sucking at ducking today and thought for a second, practised high alternating clippers, and all of sudden had them back with 5 in a row, which is not bad for me right now.

Whew, long post. I re read my old entries today and it's great to look back so I figured I'd write a bit more than "session today, highlights:"

Been playing a bit lately. I'd say I'm close to where I was a couple years ago when I stopped for a while, except I'd say a bit better, because my ducking, spinning, whirls and osii are more reliable now than before.

 54 contacts, new record as far as I know. Been going for at least 40 each session though and it's rare I can't do it.
 Merlin>toe>merlin>toe>merlin>toe>drop
 pdx whirl midstring a bunch
 Ripwalk>clip>rpt x 8 contacts, stepping's coming along

In other news, I found some great cross training. By that I mean I'm just jumping on our trampoline like an hour or two a day because I love doing flips, but I've also been strapping on a snowboard and flipping around with that. Aside from being it being insanely tiring, I'm pitching a tent just thinking about next season with all I'm learning. I swear the backflip will finally be mine!

Started up a job at a coffee roasting company, which is great because I'm doing deskwork all day and I can drink all the coffee I want so I always get out of work with waay too much energy and have to burn it off somehow. Jumping and kicking and flipping and spinning have done great for that.

Doug, SO PUMPED! Let's reserve some hostel room soon son!
Kevin, when's yo Jam? I'm in! I'll show you what I got if you do the same.

Played yesterday
 57 contacts! I gotta go running or something, the only thing holding me back is how tired I get after like 30 contacts.
 blurry whirl bs! Couldn't believe it when I hit it, especially flip.

I actually filmed a little bit yesterday to see if I was hitting the pdx whirls clean, and it looks like it, but what I'm pretty impressed at is that I look better when I'm just playing than in previous videos. I don't actually flinch constantly anymore watching myself, just occasionally. My fairies could be a little less exaggerated, my legovers could get closer to me and my mirages could afford to be a little more hippy than jump-overy, but all in all I'm feeling ok with it. Twas very affirming.

I don't even know if I should write a "Jam write up" for Montreal, seeing as it was more hanging out and less hardcore kicking, but it was a great weekend nonetheless. I'll write the story up in any case.

So I get out of work at 5pm in Waterbury VT, where we lay our scene. I knew Doug was on his way up from Boston and might get dropped off in Waterbury in a couple hours so when my friends Dustin and Emily called up to see about getting a drink, it seemed like things were really falling into place. We shared some beers and some food and before long Doug found us in the back of the bar. Another beer later and we were ready to head on home to relax for the night and head to Montreal in the morning. It was about this time I asked Doug a question that changed our night.

"You remembered your passport, right?"

Now, anyone who knows Doug knows he can mess with your head, so when his face fell and he finally let slip that he had actually forgotten his passport back in Boston, I was only about 60% sure he wasn't lying. But the joke would have been pretty extravagant and I believed him more and more as the night went on, as we turned south to go back down 89, to 93, penetrating deep into Boston, finally getting back to his apartment at 1am. What a drive it was, too.

The real kicker wasn't the way down, it was the way back up. Starting a drive at 1:30 is making a statement, and as road trips go, this was practically the Gettysburg Address. Spending a half hour in Boston and reaching Burlington at 5am is now high up there on my list of Top 5 Strange Road Trips.

After about 6 hours sleep and spending a little time making coffee and getting bagels in the morning, we were back on the road to Montreal! Without having to stuff Doug in the trunk and act casual, we had nothing to worry about crossing the border and we were on our merry way. It's amazing how you wind in and out of the mountains in Vermont and then all of a sudden Canada is completely flat. I could have spotted someone showering on the second floor of a building a mile away, that flat.

more soon, I'm leaving work

Doug, Shut up. We're like the Honeymooners. One of these days Alice, Bang! Zoom! Right to the moon! I had a fucking blast with you this weekend, especially because we're not afraid to give each other shit. Hope you got home alright by the way.

So where was I? So Quebec is Flat. We went driving along our way for a while, and we finally saw Montreal! Of course, we saw it from miles away, and eventually got there and Hey! There was a crazy theme park there! I really wanna try out them rollercoasters if I get to go back there anytime soon.

We got lost for a while but we finally pulled up to the hostel, found some parking real close and got ourselves situated. There was a very nice dog and frenchman managing the place and it was quite the fun looking hostel. Very hip and homey. He warned us about how parking meters are hard to spot in the city and how parking cops are dicks, and we should look out for that. We thanked him and decided to kick while we waited for the wedding reception, since we missed the boat on the wedding itself.
We walked outside to get our stuff from the car, and it was amazing. Not 10 minutes into being in Montreal, the parking ticket ninjas had been and gone and my car was their victim. I decided to deal with that when it came back to bite me in the ass and we moved on our merry way. We found this really nice park with a pond and walkers and a ton of fun things to watch like jugglers and dancers and old people and we started kicking around. I was feeling pretty good and hit a couple nice new moves.
 whirl war, swirl and then a bit later fairy ss whirl bsos and i'm pretty sure that was the first time i've hit that move either side! Doug decided to regulate me  and hit blurry whirl>whirl rpt, which was awesome, and I was really amazed at Doug's skeelz, double downs are looking so easy for him, as well as his classic spinny, ducky, osisy style coming along. It was so great to play with someone again!
It was only about an hour of shred before we had to head back to the hostel and get showered and changed for the reception. We had a couple bagels before we left and set off down the street and out into the big world, looking great, like a couple of great looking guys out in the big world. We stopped in at a little shop near the reception for some beers and a gift bottle of wine and some gatorade and promptly got lost within 100 yards of La Sala Rosa, the reception place. We had to backtrack and look around for a while, and finally it turned out the only sign for the thing was on an 8.5 x 11 inch sheet of paper on the door, so we couldn't be blamed.
Well, we waltzed right into that Sala Rosa (or I suppose salsa'd in, as the Spanish do) and found the place almost entirely devoid of wedding guests. They hadn't arrived yet but we sat down at the bar and lo and behold it was Johnny Suderman and JP, aka skankin on modified. I hadn't seen Johnny in forever and we all sat down at the bar and had ourselves a nice beer. By the end of that one, though, the guests had started arriving so we went up to the reception room and Doug and I managed to find a seat in the back of the room where we could drink our 12 pack out of sight of the bar. Eventually JP and Johnny came to join us and the reception began.
I'll start off by saying I love weddings and the receptions that follow. Nothing's better than the hope and happiness of a newlywed couple, along with booze and happy people who all look great, coupled with music. This one was no exception. I hadn't really met Nick Laroche before and he welcomed me into the wedding like a long lost brother. There were handshake lines and speeches (James' was awesome, I wanna do a best man's speech someday, even if I'm no great shakes at writing), gifts and song singing and the classic bride and groom smashing cake in each other's faces. I happened to mention in an offhand way to Johnny that I wanted cake smashed in my face someday, and shortly thereafter the night got out of hand. The war started when we fed each other cupcakes and smashed them in each other's face, which I thought was cheeky and fun, but Bearded Johnny couldn't get the smell or taste off his face, and soon went on the war path. Along with JP and Doug, I think more frosting was smashed in our faces than we ate that night. Loved every second of it. We all got up and danced to manies of memorable songs like 500 miles ... and others. I got to dance with Mel, a very nice girl with an incredible back tattoo and sooner than anyone wanted, the night was closing out, the bar was closing up, and the busboy found our empty 12 pack when he cleared the tablecloths. It was time to leave.
The walk home got to be a bit more of a death march. I must have done something strange to my hip or not stretched it out enough after playing that day because walking back was really getting to me and making me irritable. It wasn't helped much when both Doug and I couldn't find the hostel for a while, but the idea is pretty hilarious now, how much we got lost and backtracked in a single weekend. I think we essentially walked and drove enough for two trips worth of Montreal.
Well, the night just got more ridiculous. We got back to the hostel and our 9 bed room was crowded, under ventilated and full of heat and jerks who turned the light on at three in the GOD damn morning. But 6 hours of sleep or so later we got up and we were refreshed? We got up in any case and had a couple more bagels and got some coffee around the Tam Tams and eventually kicked around with Johnny, JP and James. hmm 3 J's. Funny. Twas quite the fun time watching folks play, but my hip was really not helping anything and I had to sit out more than I would have liked. I hit a bunch of flip merlins trying to hit it b2b, but that was probably my only highlight. Doug on the other hand was tearing things up like a strongman with a phonebook, and people took notice. Some dudes filming for music video footage stopped by for like a half hour, hour or so to film us playing and it was awesome hearing all the gasps and "holy shit"s they came out with.
Shortly enough, though, the trip had to come to an end in order to get Doug back to Boston that night, and we had to head home. We stopped near the border for some nice canadian candy. I introduced Doug to Bueno, the poor man's Ferraro Rocher, which for me is probably up there with snickers in my top 5 candy bars. We crossed the border without them giving us too much lip and finally rolled back into Burlington. We got Doug some food and managed to get a bus out of Burlington and the weekend was unfortunately over, with very little time left for me to sleep that night. I can't wait for fall. School again, I can sleep for so much longer, man oh man I'm tired all the time. I'm gonna be such a happier person then.

If you didn't read this, just know that I had a Great Time in Montreal with Doug and all my friends, new and old. The end. I just wish we had some pictures. Next time. I see it all now

So since Montreal, I've managed to play a few times, maybe five or six, but I've kept having to stop after about a half hour because my hip flexor's kept bothering me. I was really hoping it would go away on its own, but I guess not. It came to a head over the weekend at Boston jam, I fought it on Saturday because I really wanted to play but that was a losing battle and by the end of the day I tried to do an inside delay and just about fell over.
So I'm giving it a break and I guess not playing much footbag for a week or two in hopes that it'll finally heal and I can get back to rippin it up, because I've really come a long way since I started playing again this year.

However, Boston Jam was awesome! Another crazy time with the Boston Crew. Many drinks were had, many things were smoked, and many bags were kicked. I had a blast seeing Drew Martin, Waylon and Bruce Dole again, as well as Pete and Kevin and of course m'good friend Doug, and it was sweet to meet Mark, Nate and Dave. We played by the beach on Saturday and it was awesome to play with other people rather than soloing. It took a couple hours before my hip was too far gone to play anymore, so I managed to hit a couple new moves and long strings before stopping. Hit my first spinning osises, spinning ducking clippers, footed spinning whirl, almost merlin b2b, all very cool. When I'm good to play again, I can't wait to work more on spinning and dexless stuff, I haven't given it much of a chance before now but it's awesome! I still love the fiddley technical stuff, the merlins and atomsmashers and such but I figure I spin all the time snowboarding, I should play to my strengths and it could help out both my sports!
Oh yeah, when competitions came around, I did ok in circle and request, no worse than expected, but in Sick 3 it was terrific, I hit Atomsmasher>Fairybeater>Torque right on the 5th try! I haven't it in a while and it won, which made me laugh.
The next day Doug and I got some awesome diner food and coffee and met the crew out at this cool waterfront in the north end and hacked for an hour or two before heading home. It would have been great to chill for a while more, but I had to get home to take care of a bunch of homework. The summer's been tough, I've been busy from 7am to 8pm most days with work and my senior engineering project. I'm done with my internship this week though, so I'll have more time and hopefully my leg will be good shortly. In other words, the future's Mila Kunis flashing me and it's so bright I need shades.
