Grand Rapids Jam!

Post by Cass » 13 Jan 2014 16:19

Grand Rapids jam!!

Image

I RSVP’d about a week before this event happened sort of on a whim. At the time not too many people were going so I just expected sort of an intimate jam. I somehow managed to convince Alex, Adam and Johnny to come with me.

I realized at the last minute I didn’t have a functional car to take but luckily my grandma’s friend came through with her sweet SUV. I would have made it somehow but this made things much easier.

Saturday morning I left the house shortly after 7. A while later I was in Toronto meeting up with Adam. We made the foggy but somewhat uneventful drive to Johnny’s place in Paris. From here Johnny would be driving which was kind of a relief.

Next we were off to London to acquire the Alex Venis. When we arrived at his front door it was pretty clear that he had just woke up. He got his stuff together and after a brief stop we were back on the road.

By this point I was super stoked to be in a car with three of my favourite people on my way to a random warehouse somewhere in Michigan to meet up with a bunch of strangers to play hacky sack. Doesn’t get much better than this.

After the usual awkward border crossing explanation we soon found ourselves in Michigan. The awful roads really make one appreciate having good infrastructure. The grass isn’t always greener..

Michigan has Mcdonalds ever 500 feet or so. Alex was seriously stoked that he could get 20 McNuggets for 5 dollars.

Word of the weekend: NUGGET

After Alex had his first round of nuggets and I ate the lunch I packed we were back on the road again. I didn’t mind the drive at all after. Seemed like nothing after travelling to NYC and there isn’t anyone I would rather be in a car with so it was great.

We made decent time arriving in Grand Rapids around 4pm. The directions we had led us to some real sketch area with a bunch of warehouse.

We arrived at the shred warehouse and a bunch of people were already there but had been holding off on shred until we arrived. I got a big hug from Anton who I was really stoked to see again! Lots of hugs from new faces as well.

The warehouse was such a nice setup! The flooring was carpet with like padding underneath which was an amazing surface. They had a bitchin sound system pumping awesome beats.

Image

Shred was soon underway once Canada arrived. My game felt awesome and I had some runs I was really pleased with. As usual I made sure to switch circles often and play with everyone. There were a number of intermediate players present which was kind of refreshing. I’m used to being one of the less experience shredders when I play with the Ontario crew (can’t complain about that too much though :P ).

Image

It really bothers me to see people being hard on themselves for dropping and stuff. Y’all need to lighten up a bit ;)

At one point I was off to the side working on Grifter alone. After about 3 or 4 tried I managed to hit it!! My OCD then kicked in and I was determined to get the other side. I was getting close but it just wasn’t quite there. I was a little too persistent. My legs tangle up and I landed on my left ankle with a lot of force and felt my muscle tear. There was no stopping it. I was so mad at myself, how could I do that?! I remember collapsing to a ball on the ground and just thinking the worst.

After a few moments I got up and had to get out of there. I went outside to walk it off all the while cursing myself for doing something so stupid. The girls were worried about me and came to find me and brought me water. Such sweethearts.

After a few minutes I realised that I could walk and even jump without pain. It just really hurt to crank it to clipper position. I could tell it was just a strained muscle which was a bit of a relief. Still super frustrating that I would have to stop playing though. This is the first time anything like this has happened to me. I was determined not to let it bum me out because I knew I could still have a really fun time.

Luckily I got a couple hours of solid shred in before the injury. Afterwards I got changed and drank some beer and watched the others shred.

Tom K who I was looking forward to meeting arrived later in the evening with another newer player Steve. Unfortunately I only was able to have gimpy shred sessions with him this weekend and he said he hadn’t played in months. He has a nice style and it would be cool to play with him some time when we are both in good shape.

It was such a great turnout!! I really wasn’t expecting this to be such a huge event. So many new faces. I was stoked to finally meet Zach Jahner who only lives like 4 hours away from me and yet I’ve somehow never met. He has a real nice style I hope we will have a chance to shred together again soon.

Image

At some point I came out of the washroom to find Alex hanging from the ceiling. I guess my footbag had got stuck up there and I wasn’t the slightest bit surprised that he was the one to scale the wall in an attempt to retrieve it. It was a good effort but they ended up using a ladder to get the bag.

Image

Eventually people were shredded out and other shenanigans commenced. Many variations of throwing things at other things were played. And a lot of balancing was done. I ended up playing a little more on my bum ankle after a couple beers which probably wasn’t the best idea but I gave no fucks.

Image

So much fun was had. Such great people. We ended up just staying at the warehouse and drinking and partying there and it was just an awesome time.

Image

Alex got completely trashed. He had some epically bad poi maneuvers which were just plane hilarious. Some of the guys came back with like 80 nuggets. Alex easily crushed about 20 more. He passed out first.

Near the end of the night some wrestling matches went down. Probably not the best idea considering the lack of healthcare us Canadians (and some americans?) had in the states. Johnny managed to give Anton a bloody nose which may have been broken?

Image

While the wrestling went down I hung out up in the DJ booth with Johnny Sarah who is a super cool guy. We had some good talks and it was real chill. He gave me a bunch of badass music which I’m looking forward to shredding to once I’m healed up.

A few people left to sleep elsewhere and the rest of us passed out in various places around the warehouse. There were a bunch of couches and I managed to score a pretty decent one.

Everyone was up around 10 the next morning and we went out for breakfast. The breakfast joint didn’t do a very good job seating us and the group ended up being split up on two sides of the restaurant. I sat in a booth with the two Johnny’s and Greenwood. While we were waiting for food I visited the people at other tables and chatted with them a bit. The food was pretty decent and much cheaper than back home.

American coffee sucks! Y’all need to get your shit together :P

Back at the warehouse I held off on playing even though it killed me a little. About 15 minutes before the request contest I threw on my units and started playing a bit. I found that if I avoided my left clipper all together I could still shred pretty well. Did lots of rakes and other low impact tricks.

I made it further than I ever have in request contest! Usually I drop on combos that I know I can do but this time I made it something like 6 or7 rounds in and finally got out on Diving Clipper>Spinning Legover which is a combo I’ve never hit. I know I could though and definitely will once I’m playing again. I ended up getting beat out by Anton to take 6th place.

It was fun to watch the rest of the contest. It came down to Suderman and Greenwood and it was an epic battle that Johnny won in a tie breaking round.

After the contest I kept shredding and actually played pretty well considering my situation. I don’t think I made it too much worse either which is a plus.

Eventually it came time to get going. It’s always sad leaving footbag events but I find that I am able to get some good closure with hugs. I got some serious hugs from everyone. Collect all the hugs. Anton gave me some of the best hugs this weekend and I also hug a pretty good floor hug with Tom.

Once I was all hugged out we made our way to the car to head back to Canadia.
Another Mcdonalds stop later Alex and Adam both acquired more nuggets. Soo many nuggets. He must have eaten at least 60 this weekend. I’m sure his body appreciates that kind of treatment haha.

In the past I’ve had no problems at all returning across the Canadian border. This time was a little different. Johnny answered all the guards questions but the guard was not in a very good mood. I don’t think he believed our hacky sack stories. They made us pull to the side and searched our shit. We weren’t too worried because we knew we weren’t in the wrong in any way.

After that brief detour we were back on smooth Canadian asphault. Before long we were in London to drop Alex off. I got a huge hug from him. I love that kid and I’m so glad he is back in Ontario.

The rest of the travels were fairly uneventful and I made it home shortly after midnight.

So fucking great. I never regret going to footbag events even if I’ve never met any of the players and I have to travel far. It’s always so fucking worth it!!

Amazing.

Thanks guys!

The ankle is coming along nicely. I might be able to play this weekend but it will probably be a low impact, all toe session.

Here is the sweet video Anton made from that event:

I just upgraded my car to an 04 sunfire that's in really great condition. I'm super pumped to have a reliable, fuel efficient vehicle to travel to footbag events in!! :D

I was going through my old facebook posts last night which is mostly a record of all my footbag adventures. 2013 has been my best year ever for footbag.

It all started in with the Brantford jam in early January. Prior to this I had been almost completely idle in the world of footbag for a few years. Around this time it was announced that worlds 2013 be in Montreal. Seeing my old footbag friends and the idea that I would be able to go to worlds finally was more than enough to get me practicing regularly again.

I trained really hard and saw significant improvements in my game which was just even more motivation to keep it up. Starting my master’s degree in May meant having weekends off to go to footbag events. In the months leading up to worlds the Ontario footbag scene took off and we had tons of great sessions.

Worlds was the best week of my life. After that I thought I might lose motivation to keep playing however the opposite was true.

Since then I’ve made it to so many awesome events! My birthday jam in August, Matt Cross came to Toronto in September, ECFC in October, then NYC for new years and Grand Rapids last weekend! I’m pretty sure I’ve been to as many events in the past year as the whole rest of my footbag career! So awesome.

2014 will only be better! :D

Awesome write-up Cassy! Wish I could have been there. Props on grifter! Even though it caused you bad things. Seriously want some nuggets now. I'm super down for future footbag trips and I love highway driving.

Wait -- did you end up hitting flip?

Sweet Erik! It's always good to have someone to help with driving :)

I hurt myself before I got my flip Grifter so that'll have to wait a little while. I was pretty close though I think.

I had a pretty decent session yesterday. I tested the clipper and it hurts still so I stuck with an all-toe session. I was only planning to play about 15 minutes but I felt good so I kept playing for closer to 45.

Lots of toe ducking and rakes and gyro toes and things. Fun stuff.

Toe Ducking Pickup and Legover BSOS

I'll probably hold off until next weekend to play again cause I was a little sore this morning. I'm going to take this as an opportunity to cross train and give my upper body some attention for a change :P

I'm so grateful for all of the amazing people I've met through footbag. One of my goals for 2014 is to meet more new people. One way that I plan to do this is to try to connect with the Toronto juggling scene and maybe get into that a little more. People who juggle are probably awesome I figure.

We should have juggled at GR Jam. I had all my props. I had to get my kids home and to bed though, so, not really enough time anyhow. Next time though! =)

Yeah, totally! Juggling is pretty fun.

Went on my first footbag adventure in my new car this weekend!

I set off toward London Ontario late Saturday morning. It had been snowing a bit but I didn’t think the roads would be too bad. The drive went pretty smoothly until I got just passed Toronto where the conditions were just terrible. The roads were completely covered in snow in some placed and people drive like maniacs! You would think passing so many accidents would make you consider slowing down a bit and being more careful. It was a pretty nerve wracking drive but after a brief rest stop I finally made it to London safely by about 3:30 pm.

London got hit hard with winter and when I arrived at Alex’s place I could barely get in the driveway for all the snow. Alex greeted me and I got a big hug. It was great to see him again. I brought all my stuff in and unwound a bit from the drive. Before long Zach Forth arrived and it was time for footbag!

Alex lucked out in that the place where he is renting has an extra bedroom that he was able to convert to a shred room. It’s decent enough to have a three man session without being too tight. Everyone played pretty well I think. Zach and Alex have both been playing together lately and it shows. Alex is getting better consistency and working on some new concepts which is good to see. Zach had some massive runs! His style is nice and clean and real consistent.

I played decently but it’s a little frustrating mostly being limited to toe tricks since my ankle is still healing. I remember one really fun run ending in ducking pickup>handcatch.

Alex has three plums in the window sill with the following sign:

Image

After the session Zach had to go and Alex and I hung out and ordered pizza and were feeling pretty chill so we figured we would stay in. We watched a pretty neat episode of human planet. By this point it was about ten and I decided that we should party or else we would just end up passing out and that would be boring. Alex was relatively easily convinced even though he had been set on staying in. I brought out the tequila and we did some shots and found some new energy. Spent a couple hours drinking and had some really good conversations. Around midnight we took a cab to a pub downtown to meet up with some of his buddies. We drank beer and played some pool and I actually had a few good shots. We had planned to go to another place but it was last call before we knew it.

Getting a cab back was tricky but we got one eventually and grabbed some shawarma from a place nearby. It was probably some of the be shawarma I’ve experienced.

Alex made some bacon for breakfast and we had bagels and coffee. Zach came over for our second shred of the weekend and it was a lot of fun. He had jelly beans that were some bizarre flavours but some were really good and you could immediately tell what they were. Popcorn was gross but the coffee and bubble gum ones were delicious. I pushed my ankle a bit and did some clipper stuff and it actually felt pretty good! I think I will be back to normal pretty soon which I’m happy about. I feel really limited without my clipper.

Zach had to get going and Alex and I did some stretching and made some poor attempts and some couples yoga from this “yoga for the family” book he has. We hung out some more and got a second round of shawarma and eventually I had to get going.

Again the roads were just brutal due to the wintery conditions so it took about four hours to get home. I made it safely though so it was completely worth it.

Hurry up summer!

FAT session Saturday!

Image

I made sort of a last minute decision to go. I wasn’t planning to because I had a school commitment that morning but I just couldn’t stop myself because I knew it would be a good turnout.

I hurried to the train station and was delighted to run into Zach, a friend of mine from school. The train ride is always pretty boring so it was nice to have someone to chat with.

I arrived at Bahen about half an hour late for the session and only Erik and Camille were there so far. We chatted a bit and soon Tom arrived! At this point we moved over to the carpeted area and began playing a bit. We were discussing our need for some music playing device and just as this conversation was happing JJ rolled up with beats pumping from his phone which he conveniently keeps shoved in his hat. This was actually fairly sufficient for our purposes haha.

Next Johnny arrived! He came with his own matt to shred on. Apparently this helped a lot because I’m pretty sure he played better at this session than I’ve ever seen him play despite being out of practice.

Image

Finally Sam Neale arrived. It was really good to see him again. I had his footbag since the last time I saw him during the summer so I was finally able to return that.

My game was feeling really solid. I’m still having some clipper pain and avoiding certain tricks but I don't have to avoid clipper all together which is nice. I got a couple runs to hand catch which always feels really good and I think one of them was even filmed 8O

DLO and Pdx DLO BSOS
DLO and Eggbeater BSOS

My Wauxpins are pretty consistent now and I always get really good reactions to them. Such a fun trick. My eggbeaters are also starting to feel really good. I can BSOS them pretty easily now.

I had a really good time shredding with everyone and I got some one on one shred with Tom which is always really fun.

The Toronto scene is so solid now! It’s so great that sessions are happening every week. Being able to make it out to these really helps motivate me to practice on my own and keep improving. It’s awesome to see the progress that others have made as well.

Great turnout at the session! Never heard of Sam before. Awesome you have players still coming out of the woodwork.

Also, good stuff on the Pdx DLO and DLO BSOS. It's a tough concept at first, but you just have to make that first dex as quick as possible and it's yours. Keep it up!

The picture that Camile is showing Tom and Johnny on her camera in that one picture was pretty notable too. There was some event happening this day and the same day last week, but this time we noticed signs saying "Hack-a-thon" or something. Like it must have been a computer convention/event of some sort, 'cause it's the computer science building at U of T. But it felt a lot more apt for our presence. Camille said something, like, "How did they know?" I hope we get to see that picture too.

Also, great photos. Is that with Instagram filters or something?

Oh, also I'm in Ajax right now. Not for long enough, but maybe next time I will bring my hack gear and we can jam.

The main reason that I decided to start blogging is so that down the road I will be able to look back and remember the best moments of my life. I sort of regret not doing this for some of the events near the start of my footbag career. I'm not much for specific highlights - it is more about the people and the experiences for me.

That being said I'm glad you guys appreciate it and read my blog regularly. It means a lot :)

The first photo of the last post is just an iPhone filter and the last two are instagram. I like to try to get at least one or two photos each session to highlight those who attend and capture the atmosphere.

I was a little rough on my ankle Saturday. Guess I should take it easy for a while.

Fat session Feb 8!

Image

I met up with Nathan at the Oshawa GO train station. I think the last time I saw him was for my birthday shred so it was cool that he decided to come out. I just learned from Erik’s blog that he was responsible for convincing him to come this so that’s cool. The trip wasn’t too eventful except it took a little longer due to part of the subway line being out of service.

We arrived about 15 minutes late and a bunch of people were already there shredding! Erik, Camille, Alex, Zach and JJ were all super punctual which was cool.

I hadn’t played since the FAT session last weekend cause I keep irritating this stupid injury. I resolved not to do any clippers at this session and I managed to keep to that for the most part aside for a few bails to my good side.

I recently got some climas in the mail from Holly which I was super stoked to try out. I get to be all matchy with Erik now :P Once I put my insoles in they felt really good and fit perfect! I brought other shred shoes just in case but ended up shredding in the climas for the entire session. They have a really nice toe even though I’m sort of used to having more of a toebox.

Not too many highlights and my shred feels kinda boring because I’m so restricted by the tricks I can do right now. On the bright side I managed not to further irritate my injury.

Tapping DLO

Adam and Johnny arrived a little later and we had a huge 9 person turnout! Camille had to leave fairly early and I didn’t get a chance to shred with her but I got time in with everyone else. I played a bunch with Erik. He is so ridiculous. Such consistency. Adam was rippin’ it up as always. Everyone is improving which is so awesome to see! Alex and Zach have been playing regularly and it shows.

Image

Near the end of the session when we were pretty much dead I got some one-on-one time with the great Canadian hero :) My favourite thing pretty much ever. We were both tired and not playing super well but it didn’t matter. Johnny mentioned that it reminded him of our sessions in his old Brantford shred room when we were both super hot and tired and just kept pushing anyways. So awesome.

Alex, Zach and JJ are all freaking awesome hilarious people. This is great but when all three are present at a session the jokes can make it hard to concentrate on shred :P

Alex and Zach had to head back to London and I got some hugs. I took an extra from Alex.

We played a long time! It was cool cause not everyone was in a hurry to leave after. Johnny, Adam, JJ, Erik, Nathan and I headed to a nearby pub for a drink afterward. It was really nice. Much discussion about the skydiving event I’m planning happened. Johnny seems to be on board to help make it super awesome! :D He tried to change the name on me to something involving the acronym “There will be bacon(s)”. While I’m totally on board with having an abundance of bacon at this event I’m not sure the name is going to fly. Everyone seems really stoked about the event and we want to do some sort of players pack to make it a little easier on people travelling in. This is my first planned event so I’m going to do what I can to make it super awesome :D It’s really cool that I will have some help with that.
