World's 2020
Re: World's 2020
So I assume that Shred-off Top 16 hasn't been announced yet with the intent of leaving us on edge about who made the cut?

Re: World's 2020
Top 16 just got announced. Interestingly, I have been in pools with Pawel throughout the tourney so far. Now I am paired with him in the next round of shred-off.

Re: World's 2020
I have been thinking, what other surprises can be waiting for us in this online worlds
Here are some possible highlights I forsee:
Tina Lau in routines, actually the women routine top 3 will be quite difficult possibly, battle between Tina who did not play for 1 year, Paloma who has been a strong force while Tina's absence, and the emerging Tina Lau with a beautiful style and some of the craziest double dexes I seen? Vasek whirr style? What a gymnast!
Yoshi and Yuji in doubles routines, now this can be very surprising considering their artistic senses, it will spice up doubles finals for sure
Open finals will be quite a headache for judges if we consider qualifications, But overall I think a fully czech podium is quite possible, I think only Ken could get a place on the throne besides a Czech, I think Taishi will lack difficulty compared to most finalists and will miss the podium.
shred 30 scores?? I am no fan of shred 30, but this is one hell of an opportunity to set a new record.
sick 3 finals, hmm I wonder if we will see a better combo then Olaf's from Prague or Felix's sick 3 from Montreal (my 2 best that I saw live personally)
for the rest, intermediate finals I really like Yu-ji and Carlos, they have lots of potential, I wonder how long Carlos has been playing?
Alright, now we wait for surprises! Anything else you think can be a surprise?

Re: World's 2020
Interesting thoughts Mathieu.
I'm also curious about who made finals for Sick 3.
Do we know with certainty that Tina Aeberli is competing in routines? I saw she scratched in Shred Off. I feel like even if Tina A is rusty, I would have her favored over the field.
I haven't watched much of Yuji, but Yoshi has impressed the hell out of me with his choreo and presentation. I agree this could be a lot of fun.
I don't know how much I'd read into the qualifying round. I got the impression from a lot of the routines that people were playing it safely, so I wouldn't be surprised to see a massive jump in difficulty and originality in Finals.
I agree with all of this. The Finals pool looks like it has about 3 tiers. Honza and Vasek are their own tier, followed by another tier of contenders that could surprise them but are still underdogs, followed by a tier that is capped by difficulty. It is interesting to me, because with the old format of live competition a difficult routine was a double-edged sword. If you hit it the difficulty helped your score...but the difficulty also made it more likely you'd drop. You can see in some years where easier routines with good choreo snuck onto the podium as a result. This year's format though still rewards difficulty, but eliminates much of the risk. I expect the choreo of all finals routines will be solid, and therefore difficulty and execution will play a bigger role in parsing out where people finish.
I wonder about this. I agree that this year's format is ideal for setting up the highest score of all time. Looking at the entrants though, I wonder who is motivated to shoot for this. I think Simku, Honza, Blau, and Landes (if he submits anything) could all challenge for something in the 280 range. But I'm just not sure if anybody is all that motivated. I wouldn't be shocked if you told me somebody gets silver with like a 240 or something relatively low in that range.
I am curious to see how they run the show on August 1. It'd be cool to have live commentary. I'm also curious how they'll do podiums and announce results. Maybe I can set up a Scotch-cam, where people can see live whether I break my 869 dry streak.
I'm also curious about who made finals for Sick 3.
Re: World's 2020
I can confirm you Tina will do a routine, I know she played with no one else then Jan Zimmerman himself a couple days ago! it's ON!

Thanks for posting. Glad that Ken made it through! Too bad that Taishi didn't make it, but oh well; some people are really good at footbag!

Re: World's 2020
Interesting thought. I hadn't really thought about BAP so far. I suppose he would be a good candidate. Has he been active on other forums in the past years? Not on social media so not sure.

I see.
It looks like the Top 8 for shred off has been announced. The results have been pretty clear as day in terms of who the judges voted for, with the exception of a few.

Round of 16 judging results
Just to clarify, the Worlds Team kindly provided the scoring cards for every matchup so we could see how each judge voted for each matchup. Pretty neat to see this level of transparency. I know the NBA MVP voting has moved towards this style of transparency, and that has resulted in better results (since people don't want to be shamed for being the single vote for Carmelo the year LeBron should have been the unanimous MVP).
Anyway, it was neat to see that the matchups I deemed super close did in fact result in close splits from the judges. I won't divulge judges names or how they voted, but I think it's OK for me to share that the Boston matchup, the Kemmer/Dante matchup, and the Littlefield/Taishi matchups were all 3-2 decisions.
I wonder how close the matchups will shake out from this next round:

I think it is well within the bounds of possibility that we see an entirely slavic (3 Poles and 1 Czech) final.
Re: World's 2020
I would bet on ken to pass in finals over pawel anyday!
For the rest, i think everyone is toast but we never know!

Live Show August 1
I'm getting excited for the Finals Show even though it's still 11 days away. Looks like it's starting at 1 pm in the afternoon here in Colorado. A bit early for drinking for sure, and I doubt my kid is going to be that interested in watching the whole thing. I wonder if they're getting people to do commentary, and if so who? I'm hoping there's a chat window we can participate in as well. Maybe I can film myself and then make a vlog off it at some point. We'll probably get more details soon.
Looks like a 4 am start for Taishi in Japan and a 7 am start for TJ in New Zealand.

Re: World's 2020
I think it's going to be like the Worlds streams where you can comment on Youtube. I'm thinking it would be cool to have a Google Meet running simultaneously, which can actually show people's interactions at the same. Think it's an early kick off for me too, probably 4am also.
