video players

Post by ebo » 08 Mar 2004 16:52

hey folks. normally I'm all about the Zoom Player (if you use windows), because it's freeware, it's small, incredibly configurable and it has that neat slow-mo and frame2frame feature.
(get it here: Zoom Player)

But I just found this neat little program:
VLC Media Player
It's a crossplatform (!) media player and streaming server. Best of all it plays nearly every codec you could imagine, so no need to download all those codecs anymore. plus, you can set slowmotion to 0.5, 0.25, down to 0.13 :) which is awesome for shred videos.
and it is highly configurable, too :) and skinnable, for those of you who like it styley...
One more thing; I've had quite a lot of movies that played too slow on my computer (560Mhz P3)...VLC Player plays them all perfectly.

Enough recommendations for now..laters.
(I hope, from now on, nobody will use the ultra-crappy Windows Media Player anymore...) :?

Although not listed, Mplayer is quite excellent as well.

vlc player doesn't seem to be able to play .wmv tho. Stupid microsoft
codecs. Pain in the ass for everyone.

I use WinAmp. Guess I'll just select 'other' then.

I won't try VCL if it doesn't play .wmv's, but I may try that other one.

When on Windows, I use WMP9, RealOne Player, or the QuickTime player, depending on which codec the vid uses.

On linux I use MPlayer. I am very impressed with it. It has one of the coolest features: Allowing you to manually sync up audio with the video, which comes in handy with some poorly encoded full-length movies.

I use MPlayer on Linux, but there is a win32 port. You can find it here: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/win32-beta/. Download the "minigw" zip file. All you have to do is unzip it to a folder and just drag the video file onto the executable (otherwise you can run it from the command prompt). I haven't found a video it won't play (including Real).

i use media player classic.
its in the same format at the old windows media player. it plays all the windows media and everything else ive come across except mp4s i think. very basic. i like it. i want to try that player youre talking about too, but i want to hear your answers to these other questions first. particularly ebo's and max's.

Hmm... I'm not sure about VLC and WMV files, but I can tell you for sure that it doesn't come bundled with any adware/spyware/etc.

ok here it goes. neither zoomplayer or vlc player have any ad-ware,
spyware or anything. vlc player was developed on a unix machine, i
think. both are VERY freeware :) and clean too!
VLC Player does seem to have problems with wmv9, though.

Remember the slowmotion feature, guys! :)
And with zoomplayer, you can even do frame-by-frame advance with
your mouse wheel :) soo good for shred vids.

I guess im the only one using bs player. I've yet to run into a video file it doesn't play, if also does ogg subtitles, and has MANY really cool options, like making your desktop wallpaper be the video.
