Personally I think that if you are playing in a public place you shouldn't have a problem with being filmed. If you don't like being filmed don't play in a public place. However I also think that it is respectful to ask and shows that you do respect the person you are filming’s feelings. This is important because you may want to actually play footbag or talk to them at some later stage and if they feel that you don't respect them, they probably won't respect you either.

I think it's a completely different situation if you are planning on making profit from the video. I think it may even be illegal in most places to make money from other people's performances without getting their permission first (but I'm no lawyer so there's probably an equal chance I'm wrong). Some people may want a free copy or even a cut of the sales. I don't think this is too much of an issue at the moment since the people who will buy the copies are the same people who would download them for free anyway but if footbag videos ever get to stage where this is real money being made, I think it's definitely going to be an issue.

Basically if you want to be friends with the person you are filming you should ask them if it's ok or they might get offended and hate you. If you are going to make money from it you should definitely let them know and ask them before doing it. - That's my opinion on the topic anyway.

Also it is a little worrying about what Ryan is doing - only because I hope it doesn't make other people do the same. Some people may feel bitter about having to pay for the footage and decide that next time they make a video they'll make sure Ryan has to pay for it too and this could lead to the death of great online footbag videos. Obviously it will take a fairly long time to happen and Ryan wouldn't be solely to blame - I just really like getting to see footage from around the world of events I couldn't go to and people I haven't met for free. I probably would have never started playing footbag if I had to pay to see any footage. Especially worlds footage.

I think you're exaggerating a bit, there. He's putting out a full -two hours- of footage. Most stuff you download online is maybe 2-10 minutes long. Two hours consitutes a full-length film. There are very few films over 30 minutes online, and this is probably why. You don't see Honza and Dexter uploading the Champion's League and such online... Further, footage that long takes up a ridiculous amount of space on your computer.

Also, we've had plenty of chances to see footage of Worlds. ;) Evan Lovely hit us up with a TON of Worlds footage, and probably has plenty more. I wouldn't be surprised if he did the same thing as Ryan is doing right now. Does this mean people are all of a sudden going to stop taping parts of tournaments, footbag.org will stop uploading routines of Worlds, new players will stop uploading footage of themselves, people will stop putting out bits of footage that showcase their clubs, and the like? I highly doubt it.

It sounds to me like you just want some free footage, but hey, who doesn't? :-P

I think if you compare this worlds to other worlds there is a lot less footage. Last year for example all the routines, shred and sick 3 were quickly available on the net and the first video/dvd to be released was The Move which came out in February - but that stage all the really big runs were on the net already. The move was awesome and much better than the downloaded videos but if I wanted to see the best runs I didn't have to pay for it.

I don't think I was exaggerating - but as I said - I don't think we're going to see an end of online footage instantly - but this may be the start of a decline and maybe more people will try to make money out of the footage instead of doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. If that's what they want to do I can't stop them - they are entitled to do that if they want. I just think it would be a shame.

i got the video today. heres a write up.

disc 1: written about in sections, becuase thats how the vid is set up
vasek special 1: amazing. awesome angles, really unique links, solid shred.
place des arts shred: caleb, pete, vasek, and honza tear shit UP. This is really sweet part of the vid. i really like all of petes strings and vasek hits like 7 ripsteings in a row, and all this other crazy shit.
jorden special: classic moir stuff from worlds. crazy unique tricks, sweet lines, good angles.
rialto shred: really good ales footy! really sweet vandall on it too, and dan ednie.
tam tam: i really like this. brad, ken, myself, max, riefer, sebastien, all with solid stuff.
room 108: this is all the stuff that went down in ryans room. its pretty funny, but maybe you had to be there like i was?
other sections: i havent watched these yet. there is random shred, vasek special 2, etc.

btw: my disc 1 is messed up becuase of the tape ryan put on it, so it skips and shit, but that wont happen on yours.

disc 2:
penske special: this is so sick. i love penske, and its just 3 minutes of sick stuff. he starts this one string with like 7 5's or something? i lost count. very sick.
vasek special: this is really good, its mostly stuff from place des arts. i dont like this special as much as the one on disc 1 though.
routines 1 and 2: these are just routines. bevier, pete, penske, murphy, and like 3 others? really good.
rialto night shred: SOOO PHAT. toni, jere, vasek, and mikko bust really phat. jere is insane man. he starts this one string with like blurry whirl>blurry whirl>ripped warrior>blurriest>scirpains tail>superfly or something? its just wrong.
random shred: linscott, juan, brad, tons of people in this. all solid. good pete strings in it too!

pros of the set: ok, the footy is so sick. i went to worlds so i know what went down, and ryan did a badass job of getting it all. i think he did a super job, and if anyone complains about not getting it for free, youll take that back when you watch this video. its like 3.5 HOURS of worlds. its like being there. everyone should get this off ryan. the soundtrack is the best in a shred video ive seen. maybe cuz i like the kind of music ryan likes, but its really good.

cons: ok, the quality is subpar. ryans cam is only hi 8, so dont expect anything like, crystal clear. it doesnt look amazing, but it gets the job done, and after 5 minutes of watching it, you dont even notice the subpar quality.

ill update this when i watch the rest of disc 1. peace.

Sounds sweet, thanks so much, David. I will probably buy it now. Sorry for being so picky. I just don't like buying videos without a preview or having bought a previous video from the creator. I'm sure it's worth the price -- i love long vids. Thanks Ryan and David!!!

OHHHHHHHHHHH YEAAAAAAA new tech yes single soon
Noooo please someone needs to stop this crazy lad from creating music.. its really disturbing for the most part... thats off topic though.

Jus my thoughts on the whole video thing..
I agree with most that you should get permission, but honestly any movie that i ever put out i never ..ever made money on them. Im so in the hole from puttin the money back into makin more videos and gettin bigger and better quality cameras... so i jus want to say that If any of the pros on the videos think they are missing out on some big chunk of money they should be receiving cus of the release of a new vid they have it all wrong. I think there are only a very few out there that make GOOD quality videos.. and i wouldnt even put myself in that catagory. I make cheesy vids with music dubbed over clips. Thats not a vid. For example Ellis makes quality videos, but i know for a fact that he dosent even make a ton of money off this stuff either, which is really a shame cus he does such a good job of editting and creating shred flicks. I would really like to see more of his videos. Im also not saying that there are not alot of other good people out there making quality videos im jus giving an example of someone who works REAL hard at putting something out and not jus throwing together footage.

SOO.. i think no matter how good your footage is Thomas.. from what ive heard the quality is not that great and throwing titles over a few video clips and adding music doesnt nessesarily mean you have a shred flick. Now im not knockin you for puttin this out thats awesome i think you should be releasing it on VHS possibly so you dont lose out on too much money. Honestly im sure you will get a bunch of people to buy it initialy, but you will definatly lose out in the end. Im jus saying the majority of shredders out there are not rich by any means.. most anyway.. so you need to put out something more affordable. Ill be lucky if i can sell any of my videos any more 'myself' for over 15 bucks.

Dammit im really bored sorry for the long post.. anyone who knows me knows i would never talk this much in person. I need to go shred.. im gonna hit Whirr next session.

yo, does anyone else think some of the footage on the second DVD looks kinda sped up? I was watching it the other day, and it looked as such. we were pretty partied up at the time, though, so it could just be a misperception...

Uh oh. How do I get the permission of the 200+ footbagers that I filmed from the top of the Mariott?

That would be a challenge.

Also, I am having difficulty getting my film from my hi8 to my pc. I called a few companies around town, and they want to charge me over $100/Video Hour to convert it into WMV or MPeG format. How would I do this manually?

(Pssst... If you help me, the world can get over four hours of unique worlds video for free!)

And Thomass, I would probably buy your video;
a) Because it recieved a good review
b) I don't own any shred vids, and a 3hr one would be great
c) The subpar video quality doesn't bother me in the least
d) 25$ CDN isn't really that much cash for a gift that keeps on giving

Let me know if your still producing them, and I will try to get some monayy to ya. PM me with info plz.

I would just use a Dazzle to capture the video. It has the three plugs red/white/yellow so you plug the cam into those and then into the pc. I can't remember what file type it puts it into.

If you are still selling the video Ryan let use know, cause I deffinately want one.

Yo dexter. I can do it for you.

But I can't drive to Brantford 300 times in a weekend just to burn a cd. I have the capabilities and I am coming home TODAY.

We'll be in touch.

Well I got a free copy today because Ryan is a legend :D

Firstly the footage on this DVD rocks hard. It's easily the most hardcore footbag footage I have. - there are some insane combos and runs. I can't really pick any highlights because so much of it is good. The dvd is also very well edited and has a great soundtrack. On a negative note - the quality is pretty sub standard - which is presumably the quality of the camera - it's certainly not filmed on a professional camera like sick 03. Also the filming is a little questionable at times - moves around too much.

For a hardcore footbag fan such as myself - these aren't really problems at all - but if I was lending a dvd to a new footbagger - I'd give them sick 03 or champs league over this without thought.

Also I found that random non footbag section went on for a tad too long and began to get boring.

Apart from those minor problems it's an awesome dvd - well worth the money!!

I'll mention some of the highlights: Vasek - I know he's good but he still amazes me - stuff like highstepping whirl midstring. I love Peter Irish's reaction when Vasek hits ripstein>double blender midstring. Jere Linannen is the shit!! - He goes sooooooooooo hard! I think it's been mentioned in this topic but there is a run which starts with Blurrywhirl>blurrywhirl>blurriest>blurrier>blurriest>superfly>scorpion's tail>run! (and there are another 5 or so 5s in the run!!) - He goes hard all the time! Jorden Moir is very impressive. I guess all the footage on the net is there because of the single tricks he's hitting midstring - but it was great to finally see some "standard" runs from him - without any crazy gyro symp swirling moves - but just long runs with lots of genuine and hard shit in them. It's good to know that he can string tricks together and I can now see how much he impressed everybody. Brad Kaplan's story about the famous horse was awesome!! Oh - the Dan Ednie footage was good - especially because it looked like he was going hard - a lot of the time he doesn't go as hard - but he's definitly capable of going even harder. I'm am still baffled as to why Derek Vandall didn't get into BAP. In my opinion he's a better shredder than many of the people currently in BAP and I think people who can hit 69 midstring are defintily good enough. Anyway I'll never get into bap so there isn't much point pondering it.

Anyway awesome dvd - buy it now ;)
