I got started circle kicking in my mid forties, but didn't really get into freestyle until last year (after I turned 60). So, I would say, no -- you're not too old. And to the rest of you, you can still hack when you are older, but your body may not bend quite as well.
Keep on kickin' -- it's great exercise & a lot of fun!!

One year I got some red lavers and one of those 8 panel sandmans for christmas, it was the best gift ever!!
I would say 18 is pretty young to start playing footbag. I started kicking when I was 12 and shredding at 13, but It didn't make me a pro. It's more about how much you practice and more importantly, how efficiently you practice (school the basics!!).

Oh man I feel bad looking back at this thread... I didn't make good use of these two years...
Anyway, decided to start afresh and started again this week.
I'm getting the hang of ATW, mirages, pickup etc. And I'm getting the hang of clippers on my right foot.
Funny thing is that a guy was watching me when I was practicing in the park, and he said "wow you must have practiced a lot." And I was like "um I'm still learning the very basics".

I used to play "hacky sack" back in my 18-22 era... But after getting married.. having a kid.. and basically forgetting all about footbag I was reintroduced to freestyle footbag by watching Jorden Moir on youtube. I was instantly hooked.. I was 35.. Now at 37 I'm still more determined than ever to try and at least place top 5 in USO's someday. I think most definitely as one said it's alot of desire.. You have to mentally push your self day in and day out to improve. The greatest advantage to being young is stamina.. How I would love to have that pure energy back... Don't let your youth slip away.. and 18.. omg.. I would love to have started over and kept going from 18..Your in your prime man.. shred it up!
A dream becomes a goal when action is taken towards it's achievement
Yeah, Larry, you had a great Intermediate routine at last year's USO -- congrats on winning it -- are you trying the Open event this year? And, as you said, you can start at any age. I plan on competing in the Intermediate Freestyle event this year at the US Open (and do much better than last, where I dropped everything I touched) and I will be on Medicare by that time (lol).

Carol Wedemeyer started in her 20s, and she made BAP. She was clearly the best female player until Tina arrived too.
As has been mentioned before, the key to getting good at footbag (and anything) is how much time you put into it. You can start young, but if you don't put in the time and effort, you won't necessarily do better than somebody who starts in their 20s or even 30s, but dedicates a lot of time to it. I've seen lots of players play at their peak in their 30s (Rippin, Scott D, Pete Irish), so there's nothing physically holding you back when you get older. You might not be able to play as long, and might be more susceptible to injury, but you can still play at a high level.

Dont forget that this community is tiny/ Nobody outside of this forum would ever judge your freestyle. As long as you are having fun and keeping it off the ground thats all that matters.
At a recent jam I witnessed a crazy (in my eyes, and im named crazy) event. An ex freestyler who gave it up questioned a hackeysacker (who keeps it off the ground for minutes doing tiltless plus lots of toe bails) asking what his goal was????????????????????
That was so offensive in my mind, there is this tiny group of shredders who have invented this thing (shredding) and they have gotten so confused they think they are the sport? The guy keeps it off the ground (top 90 % of people who ever played) and he does tiltless tricks and lasts like 2 minutes per run. The mindset that questions his goals dumbfounds me.

Re: Too late to start shredding?
Are you kidding me, at 18 your life (and footbagging) is just beginning. I didn't start freestyling until about 6 years ago, when I was 61. It's a great sport and a lot of fun. And, one you can do for most of your life. Heck, I plan on kicking when I'm 100.
Re: Too late to start shredding?
and I was thinking I might only have a few more good years left... Amazing.
Re: Too late to start shredding?
I didn't say I was any good -- but I am enthusiastic!
Re: Too late to start shredding?
Well, I want to continue to progress, not just stay at the same level. How would you say you are with progressing, and I don't care how good you think you are, as long as you feel like you can still progress.
