Popular drills list?

Post by Wim » 23 Dec 2006 04:31

Hey,

I was looking for a thread with a list of popular 'standardised' drills such as rubber, blubber,... (+ their trick write out) but couldn't find one.

If there is such a list, feel free to shoot me.
If there isn't, well, welcome to the drill list!

EDIT: Ken has come up with some of the most commonly accepted drills. For a veeeeery extensive list with less known drills, see the second post from Cod. Here's Ken's list:

-Rubberman (blur-atom-leg repeat, starting on any contact)
-Rubberman 2 (matador-sumo-legbeater repeat)
-Blubberman (blur>toe blur>tripwalk, starting on any contact)
-Xanabox (reaper-dso-paradon repeat)
-Plasticman (barfly-barrage-paradon repeat)
-Fiesta (barrage-paradon repeat)
-Whirl War I (whirl-pdx whirl repeat)
-Whirl War II (?)
-BAP (paradon>blur repeat)

I remember that drills list!

There's like 4 drills which have the correct name in there, and then the rest appear to have been randomly selected by throwing a dictionary into the air, and then selecting the third word on whatever page it opened to. I remember being real confused when a Japanese player would tell me proudly: "I hit the stochastic onomatopoeia drill!" I'd then ask him what it was, and it would turn out to be something that doesn't require a name, like mirage-legover-atw repeat.

In my completely subjective opinion and experience, the only drills with accepted names are:

-Rubberman (blur-atom-leg repeat, starting on any contact)
-Rubberman 2 (matador-sumo-legbeater repeat)
-Blubberman (rubberman with quantums)
-Xanabox (reaper-dso-paradon repeat)
-Plasticman (barfly-barrage-paradon repeat)
-Fiesta (barrage-paradon repeat)
-Whirl War I (whirl-pdx whirl repeat)
-Whirl War II (I can't recall.)

a decent portion look like they were named by random-letter generators even :)

i agree with ken on the accepted drills list, but i think BAP drill should be on there as well.

a lot of the drill names have similar or related names to footbag moves, in some cases ones that arent even related, which would definitely add to confusion. but it is funny to read down the list of ones i have unknowingly hit (well, only unaware of the 'name')

Wow thanks! That's pretty much what I had in mind too, although the length of Cod's list is pretty impressive (where did you find that???).

So what would the trick writeout for blubberman be? blur>toe blur>tripwalk?

1. Blubberman would indeed be: toe blur-toe ripwalk-blur repeat, though you can start the drill on any contact.

2. BAP drill is indeed another commonly accepted drill. I just forgot to mention it in my earlier list. Blur-paradon repeat.

3. Fiesta is a name from way back in the day. At least since 1995. Back then, not a lot of people were really doing drills, and there definitely wasn't as much emphasis on being bothsided. I agree that its a bit weird to have a "drill" with a name that only works one side. Take it as an anachronism.

4. The extensive drills list in the second post isn't entirely worthless; it contains several great drills which are fun to practice. I was just mocking it for its silly, unnecessary names.

5. There's something called the pixie drill, which is super long and I think covers every toe to toe pixie 3 add variant. Can't recall if it was Andrew Grant or Regamey who came up with it, and I don't recall what's in it, but that's another drill that some people will understand if you refer to it.

Ken, I've copy pasted your list in the first post for the sake of clarity, but the credits are yours :) .

If anyone can come up with other commonly accepted drills, feel free to shoot.

Fiesta wasn't so much the name of a drill, really, just the name of a combo. It wasn't a necessarily a drill to be done over and over for practice. It was simply a rare example of a combo of moves that had a name, just like an individual move has a name. Shredders probably thought that those particular moves just seemed to belong together, so much so that somebody started to refer to the combo by name and the name just stuck.

Yeah, and Blurrier and Blurriest aren't even blurry moves. So what? Fiest is what it is, so too bad.

Well, I personally call it "Pixie Everything." I'm not sure I really coined that though.

"Everything" is basically just every combination of the set and each basic downtime 2add. (mirage, legover, illusion, pickup)

I'm gunning for Atomic Everything > Pixie Everything.

Back when I started playing "drill" meant that you kept hitting the combo over and over - like "fiesta drill" wasn't barrage>paradon once, but as many times as you could. The same applied to rubberman etc. You weren't hitting rubberman drill if you hit blur>atomsmasher>legbeater>blur>atomsmasher>legbeater, you were just hitting a repeating combo. You were drilling it if you were trying to see how many contacts of it you could do. Then in the mid 2000s people started referring to repeating combos as drills. "Drill" wasn't originally used in a footbag specific context, but just in the normal manner of repetitive practice, which we still use a bit, but it's a bit confusing with it also being used to just to indicate repeating combos.
