Does cheese melt when...

Post by Switch Kicker » 18 Nov 2007 22:17

It's inside you? I've had a sliced cheese fetish lately. I'll fold a piece of sliced cheese twice and eat a quarter of it at a time when I want something to snack on. An hour before work I was just sitting down thinking randomly, eating some cheese, and I noticed that, no matter how long a piece of sliced cheese sits in my mouth, it never melts... then I though, does it melt when it's inside your body in places that are 98 degrees... So I guess the question is, does sliced cheese melt at 98 degrees?

I'm so gonna test that sometime this weeks. Gonna heat some water to 98.5 degrees and put a... melting pot(?) (It's used to melt chocolate and make cheese sauces and stuff.) in it, and see if it melts... I feel like a little kid for wanting to know this, but it's been bugging me ever since this afternoon.

Yes, I know what my stomach does. I didn't ask if it breaks down or melts due to stomach acid. I meant does it melt due to heat... or does it melt at 98.6 degrees... Don't look at my weird. And no, I'm not mental.

I don't understand this topic, and that makes me confused and angry.

Do you honestly not know the answer to your question Switch?

Cheddar: 160 degrees F
Mozzarella: 151 degrees F

Higher moisture (softer cheese) = lower melting point

So there are these things called "search engines"...

Better questions. Do people swallow whole slices of cheese without chewing? How long does it take masticated food to reach the stomach? Once masticated food is immersed in stomach acids, how long does it take to start dissolving?

These are rhetorical questions, you don't actually need to answer them.

They don't need to be answered, but it would actually be pretty interesting to find out.

By rhetorical, I mean the answers are obvious, and people should know them, and they build upon the point that this was a mental question to ask in the first place.

How are those answers obvious? Those seem like facts which need to be learned.

1. People don't swallow whole slices of cheese without swallowing. Maybe it's possible to do, but it's hardly conventional.

2. Masticated food takes a very short time to reach the stomach - as in usually less than a minute (where would it be, in your body, if it took longer than that? - don't answer this, just think about it).

3. Acids always start reacting with things (that they react with) the instant they come in contact with that object. There is no time delay while the food just sits there in the acid, melting because of body heat.

What happens to the acid when all of the food is digested?
