North American Freestylers Headcount

Post by cd » 15 Feb 2012 17:19

I'd like to see how many active footbag players there really are in North America. This is different from the Top Players list since it's intended to count everyone who is a serious player and current participant in the sport.

I am setting the criteria as follows:

Status: You are an active player who practices regularly to get better, to compete, or simply for fitness.

Involvement in the sport: You are part of the community, the freestyle scene. You attend events and/or are part of an active freestyle club and/or have a modified presence/post videos/do shows, etc.

The list is about seeing how many people are involved in footbag as athletes, as a way of gauging how active the sport is on this continent.

I shred several hours a day for a year now, still not guiltless. Maybe this year.

Well, Nick and I are the only guiltless players at Penn State, so we're covered.

You're missing the Boson Crew - Doug Tank, Pete Bowler, Kevin Hogan

I play regularly. But I'm not guiltless. I'm pretty strong tiltless though.

I love that crew. Such great energy...that's probably why they can occupy the same place in space. Great quantums too.

Your list is missing Zeb and Zac Jackson, Ben Skaggs, Jeff Overbo, and Ian Brill. Also some NYFA, notably Ben Cooke. Not sure how active people like Alex Faber, Matt Isanuk, and Taylor Chantreuil are.

As for Canada, Allen Haggett is still active, and shredding hard. Does Manna Mpepo still play?

And if you're going to count Moir, I think Clavens should count too. Neither is particularly active on the forums or at tournaments, but they both still play and are both still amongst the best on the continent.

Not sure if Grant's playing, but I know he's down to.

Here is some Canada!

Erik Chan = Semi Active

Greg Raymond from Kingston...plays with Dante all the time. Strong guiltless and active.

Adam Greenwood (Me) - Strong Guiltless/Active/Go to some minor shreds and events, but not that many tournies.

John Bagi from Kingston is semi active.

55 so far! Thanks for all the responses and PM's.

I decided to include non-guiltless players such as Tony and Mike above. Also Derrick Fogel, because he's obviously holding it down and representing better than most high-level players out there.

To clarify, the reason for this headcount is really about measuring the current health of the sport in America, and not about asking "who's good enough to make the list?". I'm trying not to come off that way.

That's why I set certain criteria in the first place, so as not to dilute the list with people who aren't truly in the game. I didn't want to count retired or inactive players. And I didn't want to be adding bunches of casual players who might sometimes go to sessions and have lavers, but aren't serious about footbag as a sport.

The scene has definitely slowed down a bit, at least in Canada.

I have seen a lot of young players start up since I have, but drop out before progressing to far....I don't know what it is. You couldn't STOP me skooling once i got into it.

Now that you have changed the criteria a bit what exactly would qualify a certain non guiltless player?.

I don't know, when I thought about it again guiltless isn't a great way to measure this. I just meant to get an idea of how many active freestylers we had in NA excluding casual kickers and retired players.

I'm going to change that criteria bc skill level isn't central to this headcount; it's more about counting actual involved athletes in the sport.

We're around 60 by the way. When I tried counting on my own previously, it was only in the 30's which was disappointing. Glad to see the scene is more populated than that.

Yeah. I don't think my Hackrifice crew plays anymore, and they were all really good. Byrin said he might be getting back into it, but I'm unsure how that's going.. What about Ianek? Does he still play? And Johnny? I'm pretty sure Rory Dawson still plays.
