12e Open de France de Footbag - Paris 24-27 February 2011
12e Open de France de Footbag - Paris 24-27 February 2011
Greetings footbag players,
You thought the 12e Open de France de Footbag would not happen … well we thought so too !!! But now I’m happy to announce that the ODF will be hosted for the 7th time in a row in Paris.
Because of very limited support from local authorities we were not able to book one of the two state-owned gyms which are big enough to host the ODF during ANY weekend until summer 2011. Therefore we had to dispatch the tournament over 4 days.
Thursday/Friday we will be at La Halle Carpentier – 75013 Paris and Saturday/Sunday we will be just across the street at the gyms Bourneville and 4bis Choisy (the gym we practice every Monday since 1999).
http://www.footbag.org/events/show/1294262550
Once again the ODF will be the largest footbag indoor competition this season in the World. Last year over 100 footbag players and aficionados came to Paris. IFPA sanctioning should be received shortly.
In the next couple of weeks the ODF web site (www.footbag.fr/open) will be launched and online registration will be available on footbag.org.
Once again it will be one of the top footbag events this winter season in Europe. Make sure that you don’t miss it !

I'm pretty likely to try and book tickets for this tonight, but for now I have to get to school.
First time in Paris
*edit*
Going to Paris. I arrive Thursday morning, super early (6:45 am), so I figured I'd see the city. If anyone else is interested, we should plan something!
Leaving mid-day Monday.
Woo!
-- Oh, and yes...What are sleeping accommodations?

The 12e Open de France de Footbag ( http://www.footbag.org/events/show/1294262550 ) was once again a huge success. More than 100 players and aficionados from 14 countries came to Paris to participate at this great footbag gathering.
Thanks to the hospitality of our local players and Arthur « Chicken Tut » Ledain’s efforts to coordinate/dispatch people, a lot of footbaggers and aficionados were put up at players’ homes.
This year the Association Française de Footbag and the local club RNH Footbag were once again able to host the Open de France in one of Paris’ first class venues La Halle Carpentier and 2 other gyms. The event was run over 4 days and players benefitted from 11 net courts and a shred area.
Europe’s finest freestyle was represented in Paris by players from Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany and Switzerland.
Once again Milan Benda from the Czech crew performed at his best and won Open Routines and Shred 30 (265.7 points). Milan is the first male freestyler to defend his title at the ODF since Vasek Klouda in 2004. The up-coming Czech youngster Jindra Smola performed a great dropless routine in finals which offered him the Silver medal. Jay Boyckuk from Canada came third in routines on his first ever participation at the ODF.
The Czech crew also ruled the Circle Contest with Milan taking gold and Jindra bronze. Aleksi Airinen from Finland took silver. Rafal Kaleta from Poland completed the circle finals.
In Shred 30 only Milan managed to beat the Fins. Aleksi Airinen got his 2nd silver medal with 242 points and Mikko Lepisto took bronze with 236 points.
The turn out and quality of net players competing at the 12e ODF was also just unbelievable with over 60 players.
Gilles “The Blade” Demers and François “Franck the Tank” Pelletier from Montreal successfully defend their title over Matti Pohjola and Janne Uusitalo from Finland in 3 games. The bronze medal was eventually taken by Arthur Ledain and Karim Daouk in an epic 3 games battle over JF Lemieux and Greg Lima.
Shirin Daouk and Helena Schlichting won Women’s Doubles Net over Lena Mlakar and Sophie Andrey. Katharina Probst and Lisa Amengual took bronz.
On Saturday evening we had another terrific Club House party, with Mini-Net, Dancing 4-Square, cool socialising and part 1 of the award ceremony was presented by the one and only Eric “Rico Del Rico” Dargent our infamous event speaker.
Sunday was Karim Daouk day. At first Karim and his sister Shirin beat Arthur Ledain and Helena Schlichting in semi-finals of Mixed Doubles Net. Then he beat Matti Pohjola in 2 games in semi-finals of Open Singles, before beating JF Lemieux in 2 close games (21-18, 21-19) in finals. That makes Lino Landau (RNH Footbag) the only player to win a game of Karim in the entire singles net tournament (schön Digga). The last match of the day was Mixed Doubles Net finals were the Daouk’s beat Tammo Rockel and Katharina Probst in 2 games. Unfortunately the number 1 seeds Ales Pelko and Lena Mlakar had to return to Slovenia on Sunday morning and therefore couldn’t compete in the semi-finals.
Jay Boyckuk ruled the Request Contest on Sunday. He was well way above all other participants, hitting all combos with the mic in one hand and the clipboard with all tricks in the other. Eventually Rafal Kaleta took silver. Seb “Hurricane” Duchesne stepped-off the net court and took the bronze medal. At his 4th consecutive participation at the ODF, he also reached quarter-finals in Open Doubles Net. Nice performance Seb !
For the sixth year Prokicker was the official footbag net provider of the tournament. Thanks again Yevez.
Thanks a lot to all volunteers who made this event possible and to all players who travelled to Paris !
