Re: Return of the Shredi
As you can probably guess from the above posts, I kicked today. I also broadcasted it on UStream. It seems 3 people tuned in at one point or another. Erik, AdBlock (Who is that?) and my mother. If you missed it and want to watch it now, feel free...
http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/44170819
It's 54 minutes and most of it is me chasing after a small bean bag that keeps flying off into corners of my cluttered basement.
Since I couldn't see the comments and therefore could not interact at all with Erik (the only person making footbag comments) I just did a drill session. That means I did the following:
Stepping ss Clipper 5 time bs
Pixie ss Clipper 5 time bs
Leg over > mirage RPT x5
Smear 5 times bs
Plo 5 time bs
In addition to those I hit:
Dimwalk both sides
reverse swirl both sides
spinning clipper both sides
gyro clipper (strong side for sure, might have hit flip)
16 tiltless contacts
strong side paradon
I recorded myself doing Stepping ss Clippers and Pixie ss Clippers so that people could give me advice on those sets, so advice away, please.

Can't get my pixie vid to embed for some reason, so ya gotta click it:

Re: Return of the Shredi
STEPPING
-thrust your dexing knee outward and slightly up
-turn your hips in the direction of the set (you're facing straight the entire time, which makes it harder for the dexing leg to get around the bag)
-think about making, like, a quarter turn when doing the set. I say this about a lot of trick components, but I think it makes a huge difference. You shouldn't just be facing straight the whole time. You have to move your body around the bag, not the bag around your body.
-I think with just the twisting of the hips/turning tip, you will find stepping a ton easier. Then if you're still having trouble make another video. It looks like most of your problems are stemming from that.
-I would recommend trying sidewalks first a bunch. It's a lot easier. Once you can do that consistently, then move on to stepping clipper which will require a better set.
-When doing stepping same clipper try to do the plant -- it requires a higher set instead of just going straight into the clipper 'cause you don't have enough time
PIXIES
-Look fine to me? Just do them more and they will get better
-Remember to keep the bag close to your body, not way out in front of you
-Pointing your knee in a bit helps
-But you seem to be doing both of those fine
VIDEO
If you make more videos, it would be helpful if you did the tricks/components facing forward, but also from the side, so it's easier to see exactly what you're doing.

Short answer: I make Corn Chips.C-Fan wrote: Props on the promotion at work too. What do you do?
Long Answer: I work in a Frito Lay plant. We make all the Doritos, Tostitos, Cheetos Puffs, Cheetos Corn Twists and Smartfood Popcorn for Western Canada. As well as all the Munchies Snack Mix and now Cheetos Mix Ups for all of Canada. In the past we have also made some popcorn for the US but currently we are not. My specific job now is Packaging Machine Operator (PMO). Which means I run the machines that weigh the chips, put them into the bags, put the bags into boxes and then stack the boxes on a pallet. It's actually really interesting for the most part, but my training has been lacking. I know enough to run the lines well if nothing goes wrong. If something goes wrong though... I feel completely helpless. Like last night. Hopefully more training will alleviate that. My trainer has been gone for the last two weeks so I've been running things the best I can. Last night we had to call in a specialist to come get the machines running properly. I'm sure he loved getting hauled outta bed at 3 am. I mentioned to him that I wished I knew how to do the adjustments he did and he told me that I'd get the training soon and that I was doing really well in the mean time, so that was cool.
Yesterday morning (5 pm for me) I drilled.
Stepping. I HATE YOU STEPPING. I tried to use Erik's tips, but that set just was not working. I didn't get through my prescribed stepping drills. I'm going to try to find a good stepping video so I can see the right form and see if that will help. I think I'll also post my video on the facebook page since I think more people will see it there. Maybe I'll just link to my blog and ask them to check it out. I'd like more people on Modified and I'd like the tips all in one place.
Talking to Nick on facebook I have decided to revamp my drills. I think I'll keep these for all of march and then see where I am. Here is my new drills list:
Stepping ss Clipper 5 time bs
Pixie ss Clipper 5 time bs
Leg over > mirage RPT 5 times
right toe ss clipper > near mirage rpt 5 times
left toe ss clipper > near mirage rpt 5 times
right atw > orbit rpt 5 times
left atw > orbit rpt 5 times
right mirage > mirage rpt 5 times
left mirage > mirage rpt 5 times
right illusion > illusion rpt 5 times
left illusion > illusion rpt 5 times
right pickup > legover rpt 5 times
left pickup > legover rpt 5 times
I got them all except the stepping as I mentioned. Although I'm not sure I did the repeats properly on some of them. Mirage > mirage rpt would be 4 contacts per drill and i think I only did 2 for some of them. My brain just could get that straight for some reason. Same with Illusion, but I'm sure I can do those ones right so I'll be sure to do that next time. Next time should be tonight (this morning? Gah! Working nights messes with my sense of time so much) as long as my daughter goes for her nap at the right time.
Re: Return of the Shredi
since i'd say i am pretty good at pixies, here's some advice (which hopefully makes sense to you):
- when learning them, try NOT to release the heel of your support leg off the ground to much, try to keep it on the ground! (when you go for pixie ducking, pushing the heel will help to gain some extra height)
- imagine dexing with the ankle, so you'll have to be fast and effective (always think of it as an explosive motion)
- also plant your dexing leg a little faster and you'll be getting the dexing window more tight
- try to do it with more and less movement from your hips (you will get what i mean when you keep doing them)
- drill pixie legover!!! and also magellan > plo > repeat, when you feel comfy use pickup instead of legover
- try a muted magellan with a small break between dexes
but overall your pixies already look good, keep practicing! ohh and for stepping, i'm still learning, but what helps to build muscle is ducking clipper and near symp mirage.
regards and happy shredding

Re: Return of the Shredi
For stepping you might want to try and drag the bag just a litle bit(so that you don't fake it.When I do it,after I do the dex my set leg lands first and right after comes the dex leg. Also I think you should set lower and dex quicker(so that you do the dex where you do now,but you have more time after that)
For pixie I would say you don't have enough control after the dex and maybe try to set it more like toe delay(so that you don't turn your leg so much.
Hope this helps
Videos wil probably tell you more than what I wrote:

Re: Return of the Shredi
Thank you for the advice fine sirs! I tried them out. Pixies... I can't currently do them without lifting my heel. I don't lift it conciously, it just comes up with the force of my setting leg? I'll keep working on that because I can really see how the extra help will be needed to duck the set. Stepping... I still suck, but it was better than yesterday!
Drill session tonight (or is it morning?). I almost talked myself out of playing since when I woke up Natel and Mara-Jade were not home. That generally means they went grocery shopping and I like to be available to help carry the groceries in and put them away and what not. For some reason I still only made myself a small cup of coffee and say down at my desk to drink it and check out what was going on online. Reading the tips for stepping I was getting on facebook and modified helped inspire me to get up off my butt and play. I ended up getting interrupted when Natel and Mara-Jade got home, but I didn't mind too much. I just helped carry the groceries upstairs, said nap nap to Mara-Jade and then continued my session. Made it through all my drills this time.

Stepping was still bad and it took me a very long time to get through it, but at least today I could see some progress. I think I'm really lacking power in my legs for getting the launch (spring) from my support leg. Hopefully drilling will help that.

Re: Return of the Shredi
Happy birthday to your daughter!
What's your Fearless record?
I found that trying to hit Fearless stuff is counter productive if you can't do stuff like Infinity x100, 100 Tiltless, 50 Guiltless, etc… Shit gets WAY easier once you can work yourself up to cross those and the like off your list.
Awesome job with the drills man! In my opinion, you will get further if you just keep it up with those sorts of drills until they are easy as pie, then a little while later, maybe attempt a Fearless record.
Fearless is a weird thing… I kinda feel like, once you've mastered all the concepts in a Fearless trick (i.e. Spike Hammer (Alpine Blur) Mastery of Mirage from all main surfaces, Ducking from all main surfaces, Ducking Mirage, Blur, Stepping Ducking Toe, Stepping Ducking, etc..), then it is safe to attempt to put that trick in a Fearless combo. Otherwise, it's dangerous. I learned that the hard way :/ To be honest, I'm not even ready to put much Fearless stuff into my runs yet.
I'd rather see you aim for 50 or 100 Tiltless contacts instead of 2 or 3 Fearless. 50 - 100 Tiltless is much more impressive, in my opinion, and I would get more stoked over that rather than the Fearless.
Keep it up man. Those drills are seriously the way to go!

Co-sign with the above two. I'd leave fearless until your BOP and basic guiltless game is in really good shape. As Nick points out, you'll have a much better foundation for fearless and it will be easier once your basics are really mastered.

Re: Return of the Shredi
Pretty great post. I larghed.
What was the 1 Fearless?
I would be interested to see how one of my ideas works and maybe you'd like to try it out and be my guinea pig…
My idea was to get good sat footbag by picking out big tricks you want eventually…
So like if I wanted to be good at Mobius, I would drill and try to master the following: Osis, Far Osis, Far Symp Osis, Near Mirage, Toe Mirage, Torque, Gyro Clipper, Spinning Clipper, Spinning Osis, and Spinning Symp Osis. That is Mobius, completely broken down. I thought it would be an interesting idea to try, but I never did end up doing it. Sound appealing to you?

Re: Return of the Shredi
That sounds like a really interesting way to do it. How many big tricks would you set as goals? I would fear that it would create some big gaps in your game.
Looking at in one way though, it kinda what I'm doing right now, but for smaller tricks. I'm working stepping and pixie sets, as well down time dex moves to be able to put them all together when they get good. Applying that same principle to larger tricks should work too.
Oh ya, you asked what my fearless record was. PS Whirl. But I think I've also hit blurry whirl at one point. I was thinking I might be able to link those two by the end of the competition if my stepping gets good enough.

Re: Return of the Shredi
It would leave some holes in your game, but thats ok, as long as you get good at some concepts where you can string with them entirely and have it be a good string.
I think every player should build up their game with only mastery of a few concepts at first: All basic 2 adds… then maybe 2 different uptime sets (?)… You master all that, your game rips so hard, even if you have plenty of holes in it. Once you master everything on your initial list, go back and fill in holes, one by one. That's kinda what I'm doing now and it feels like it's working really well.
But to answer your question, I would choose 3 - 5 big tricks as goals, then drill up to them.

Hi.
Footbag session.
1000 calories
That is all.

Re: sen
Right, since I'm returning, or trying to, I might as well outline my goals and plans.
For now, the goal is simple:
Be active.
And the plan:
3-4 sessions a week burning 1000 calories each.
Just did two last week and it wasn't too hard. Obviously I didn't do anything too crazy. I actually spent a lot of the time trying to figure what to do, so I'm going to implement the drill list I had from ... 4 years ago... To give my sessions some structure. I'd also like to figure out some sort of resistance exercises to add into my workouts.
The Drills:
Stepping ss Clipper 5 time bs
Pixie ss Clipper 5 time bs
Leg over > mirage RPT 5 times
right toe ss clipper > near mirage rpt 5 times
left toe ss clipper > near mirage rpt 5 times
right atw > orbit rpt 5 times

right mirage > mirage rpt 5 times
left mirage > mirage rpt 5 times
right illusion > illusion rpt 5 times
left illusion > illusion rpt 5 times
right pickup > legover rpt 5 times
left pickup > legover rpt 5 times
Long term goals? Meh.

Re: sen
Tuesday Session
I went through my drill list. Not only will they help me get better, but it gives me focus. That focus means I'm not watching either the time OR my calories burned. Since I want to make it to 1000 calories each session I had been watching it pretty closely. Today I didn't really start watching it until I had hit 700 calories, so it was better.
I hit:
Stepping ss Clipper 5 time bs
Pixie ss Clipper 5 time bs
Leg over > mirage RPT 5 times
right toe ss clipper > near mirage rpt 5 times
left toe ss clipper > near mirage rpt 5 times
right atw > orbit rpt 5 times

left mirage > mirage rpt 5 times
right illusion > illusion rpt 5 times
left illusion > illusion rpt 5 times
right pickup > legover rpt 5 times
left pickup > legover rpt 5 times
and I'm adding:
fairy set hand catch x 5 bs
Thoughts:
My strong side stepping set surprised me. I hit the 5 with more successes than drops. My flip stepping set... did not surprise me. It is weak. But that's why I'm working on it, right. I don't hate my pixie set, but it's always been my strongest. I plan on working fairy (or is it shut? I'm confused) until I can more comfortable hit something like clipper from it. Some of my hand catches were low, but again, that's why I'm working on it.
My body isn't doing great. I feel some shin splints. I've always struggled with them, and I can't figure out how to play on my toes more. I'll need to focus on that. I've got... something... going on with my left foot. I noticed it before I started playing again, but it's really noticeable when I play. I don't know how to describe it. It's like a dull pain on the top of my foot. Flexing my foot really brings it out. AND I think I do weird things with my neck when I play. It makes it hurt for days after. Maybe playing for my health is not the best idea. lol
Leg over > mirage RPT 5 times
right toe ss clipper > near mirage rpt 5 times
left toe ss clipper > near mirage rpt 5 times
right atw > orbit rpt 5 times
left atw > orbit rpt 5 times
right mirage > mirage rpt 5 times
left mirage > mirage rpt 5 times
right illusion > illusion rpt 5 times
left illusion > illusion rpt 5 times
right pickup > legover rpt 5 times
left pickup > legover rpt 5 times
and I'm adding:
fairy set hand catch x 5 bs
Thoughts:
My strong side stepping set surprised me. I hit the 5 with more successes than drops. My flip stepping set... did not surprise me. It is weak. But that's why I'm working on it, right.
